I saw another thread about gymnastics tuition and everything, but was unable to post. I'm wondering, why is everyone's tuition so high for not so many hours?

Ours starts at $160 for 9 hours (this is team). The next level is $165 for 12 hours. Then $170 for 15. I go for 20 hours and this costs $175.

Our leo's are $200 typically. I'm wondering why some gyms leos cost almost $400 and their tuition is $300 for like, 9 hours. At my old gym, we had FOUR hours for $375.

Why is a lot of tuition so high, but mine isn't ?

I think a lot of it depends on where your gym is located and the amount of competition from other gyms in your area. We pay approx. $500 per month for my DD who is a level 8 and practices 5 days a week for 4.5 hours per day. Our leos cost us $350 (I know that some other gyms they cost WAY more, I think the more covered in sparkles the more expensive the leo is). Our girls wear their comp leos for 2 years and the girls keep their floor routines for 2 years also, so it keeps the cost down a little bit for the parents (versus having to buy a new leo, floor music, choreography every single year). Also, if the gym has a history of training high level girls then they can charge more for tuition (our gym has a pretty good history of getting D1 scholarships and this year is training 4 girls elite).

Area of the country, how much competition there is for getting/retaining gymnasts, cost of rent, etc. etc. etc. There really is no rhyme or reason, so your family is lucky to have found such a deal! Our current gym gets $830 per month for my two girls, plus about $100 each per comp- but in the past we've paid close to $2,500 for one gymnast for five meets. We've paid all over for choreography (with the cheapest being done by a world famous choreographer and the most expensive being some of the worst I've ever seen). We've had comp leos from $55-$300. Everything about this sport is wishes and guesses.

Our tuition is $80 a month for 7.5 hours a week... But you also have to be a YMCA member, and that can vary depending on the type of membership (youth, senior family, or family) and can range from $19 - $71 a month). If the family uses the Y for other things (a lot of the moms work out during practice and / or have other kids in other activities), then the family membership goes a long way.
Our team leotards are almost always under $100. We keep the team leotard as long as it isn't being discontinued (so far, the longest has been 3 years). Warm ups are also around $100. We have had our current ones for 4 years now.

I also attended a YMCA. I paid AU$160 (that'd be about US$120) per month, for three hours a week. I never paid for leotards/competition fees, because I didn't compete.

Some of these prices are insane! But then, the hours are also very high, so it makes sense. Still, $300 for a leo seems a bit much. I get that they're well manufactured and have lots of rhinestones, but goodness. If it were up to me, I'd have a team leo decorating day where everyone gets togther to glue their own rhinestones on...but maybe that's my mother's seamstressing and costume design occupation coming through :D

Always gets me. 500 per month! I can't help but think that no one would do gymnastics round here if it was that expensive...
Seriously where does all the money go???? I would love to see a finacial year report of one of thos super expensive gyms. Our kids pay around 50 Euros tuition per YEAR regardless of the hours and most years we still end up with a slight +. Of course our coaches get paid less, we have less equipment and get state funding but we still have to pay for the use of the gyms, salaries (even if they're low to non existent), new equipment every now and then and the club usually also pays competition fees and this is such a HUGE difference....

At 9 hours per week, that's 36 hours a month. $160/36 hours a month= $4.44 per hour. That's a bargain in instructional costs, if you compare it to 1/2 hour of piano lessons for $25 a week. Leotards cost what they cost according to the manufacturer. The more colors, patterns, and stones, the more they cost. Add a warm-up with embroidery or personalization or gems, and there's the cost. Some gyms build the meet fees into the monthly fees, so the tuition is higher. Some it depends on where you live, the quality of coaching, etc. Meet fees are the cost of entering the meet per gymnast, plus the coach's pay for the session/day, plus the team entry fee split among the team members. The meet entry fee is static, the coach's pay is according to the gym.

Well, I know our gym specifically isn't exactly "getting rich" When you consider their rent, insurance, utilities is probably in the realm of my best guess 10-12 thousand (and I'm probably way off and it is higher)....and that's before any employee costs. Just calculating average tuition times number of team kids I can tell you already the gym is in the "hole" and is making up the difference in rec classes.

Well it must be, never doubted it. I never heard of anyone in the gym world being particulary rich. But that difference in income is just astonishing...

It depends on where in the country you live and the coach to gymnast ratio as well as gym equip etc.

Our previous leotard had "sequinz" instead of crystals. The cost difference for the same design was almost $100 more for the crystals.

I would pay $1000 for a leo to not have to put the stones on myself!!! I have a lot of friends who are moms of dancers and I hear the horror stories about endless nights spent adding beads to dance costumes, not to mention the training (yes, actual training) that they have to go through to learn how to properly apply the makeup (which has to be name brand makeup, like MAC) and do their hair. So glad my DD is a gymnast!!!

Haha, when I was a kid I used to do competitive figure skating. The best part about a new season was getting Mum to make the dress, exactly how I wanted it. I got to choose the fabric and the design, and Mum would always put together these awesome costumes. I have so many great memories of hiding behind rolls of fabric at Spotlight...Then we'd decide where all the sequins should go. She always refused to sew on beads, because she thinks it's a waste of time. I believe the only time she bent that rule was when she made a literal tutu (not for me, ;-)).

For me, the first hour is €17,-, second hour €12,50, third hour and every hour after that is €9.50, paid per month. Yearly tution is €25,40. Every meet i attend is €8,80. So in 1 year, i would spent about 400 euro's ( i train 2/4 hours a week). To that, Leo is about €50 and is only replaced when your own isn't good anymore and warmups are €70, and also have to be replaced when you can't wear it anymore.

Wow some of you are so lucky! I pay around $11 per hour here, although my gym happens to be the only one in the immediate area so they can afford to drive up the cost. Leos are around $250, warm ups are another $60 I think. On the plus side, our choreography/music fees tend to be less than what I've heard people pay elsewhere, although I do wish our training wasn't so expensive!!

Our choreography and music is actually free

europe is different because at least germany is "socialist" in sports - clubs are not for profit but partly state funded. sport clubs are just part of public infrastructure (like roads, schools, hospitals, libraries and so on) in this part of the world.

my sports club's fees (also offering gym besides many other sports; gymnasts train 3x4 hours per week) are 270 euros per year for adults, much lower for kids or family membership. competition fees are low and paid by the club. no extra fees for coaching. this is about the norm round here and i live inthe wealthiest part of germany.
