My dd is a competitive gymnast and was complaining of wrist pain took her to the doctor and they said they were cysts and drained them. Is it common for gymnasts to get cysts on their wrist? Any tips on how to prevent them?anything know about them?

I don't remember clearly but i think there was another thread on this and it seems quite common i'm sure if you searched using the search you would come across it, sorry i couldn't be of more help

Ganglion cysts?

Fairly common in general, gymnasts included. Apparently if they're recurrent they can take the little sac that fills with fluid out, but that's not a first choice. Your doctor will know the options, or if she starts having a lot they may send her to a specialist.

Along with what Coach goofy said I get cysts a lot.Wrists, back, ears(probably not gym related lol) you name it.My worst one was a ganglion cyst the size of a quarter on my wrist but lucky for me it popped the week before i was going to get it removed. Some doctors we've talked to think they're hereditary so there really is nothing you can do about it,but a family friend who is a PT said carbonation could also have something to do with it.Now with pop and such cut out of my diet I rarely get them but it could just be a coincidence.

Along the lines of surgery options:Its an out patient procedure and they just numb up the area and slice the cyst out.I've been told they resemble chicken gristle. Its a simple procedure the only downside is not gym for a week or two.My dad had this done and wanted to watch (which he does not recommend at all,so look away!:)

i have gymnasts wrists so i had to take a month off and get a pair of tiger paws. now it is mostly better except for when i don't use my tiger paws. but icing after practice even if they don't hurt has really helped me. its not that big of a deal i guess because it is easily curable.

Still suffering from when I got the medical dictionary treatment on mine over 30 years ago! Would never go that route again.

Just got back from the Shriners with my oldest DD who has a ganglion cyst on her wrist, from gym of course, doctor doesn't want to touch it as she says ones in the area DD's is in tend to come back more often than not. It hurts, it sucks.

I took my dd to the doc on Thursday and they gave her a cortisone shot in each wrist and she stayed off of it till today(Monday) and went to gym but wrapped one wrist with self grip wrap from cvs. She's concerned if the pain will come back and if she should still wrap it and for how long? Does cortisone get rid if them?
