At these lower levels who cares. Each gymnast is going through their own journey and at the end of the day it doesn’t affect your gymnast. Besides at the most a medal if that gymnast drops from 6 to 5 and scores better than yours. But honestly what does it matter at the end of the day. There is so much scrutiny going on without the actual understanding of to op. How does it matter to an individual gymnast. It’s insane. Our gymnasts compete 3 times a year. Over all their training and hard work. Three times a year. And only to get that national recognition. We don’t bother spending money to go to a completion unless there is a title to get to because the medals are just medals. It’s the hard work and determination to become a national gymnast out of the hundreds. Not to compete every three months for the sake of a medal that only the minority the gyms in the country compete at. Spend the time uptraining those skills not spending the time in the gym just to continuously do routines.

There are lots of benefits to competing regularly besides getting medals. Competing is an art in itself that requires practice. To be able to control those nerves and use their adrenaline to allow a peak performance at the right moment takes practise, the more the kids compete the better they get at competing well.

The trophies, medals and ribbons the kids win at comps serve a purpose greater than just being a reward as well. Each one can build a gymnasts confidence, it can be a psychological symbol to indicate that they are doing well. This plays a huge role in their success.

Success breeds success. Kids who feel like they are good at what they do tend to do it better. They are more willing to work hard, take on corrections, step out of their comfort zone etc. Just like a school kid who sees themselves as smart will get better grades than one who sees themselves as struggling.

One hundred percent agree to a point. At lower levels it’s fun and everyone gets a reward. But there’s a point where that becomes too much when a gymnast competes over certain regions and gets a higher place then competes against the top gyms and gets nothing because it’s a whole different competition. With this op what if a girl dropped back from 6 to 5 and has trained all level 6 skills and a child comes in at a greater placing which bumps out one that has previously placed well. There’s a fine line. Gymnasts can’t be taught that a medal signifies their greatness. Their achieving skills that they’ve worked so hard at on the day of a competition is what should be recognised in their minds. Not whether or not it means they get a medal.
