Has anyone else had a chance to read this yet? JO National Proposal.

I can't decide if I am completely in favor yet, but I like a lot of the ideas presented, and some really good arguments are made. I'm looking forward to the discussion on this one!

I think an overhaul would be nice.

I am really surprised no one has replied to this yet!

I am not sure what to think about it. I was hoping it was going to maybe suggest taking a certain percent of each age group vs a set number or something like that to try and fix the issue of there being drastically different numbers of people in different age groups from region to region.

I do kinda like the idea of opening up opportunities for people with a few string events.

I dont know- I don't really have a formed opinion yet. It wanted to reply in hopes of getting more conversation started about it.

I’ll respond. I still see an issue with very high scoring gymnasts missing out because of numbers in some regions.

I do like giving specialists the chance to compete at nationals. I didn’t study the document in detail, so I don’t know if this is the best path but I’m in favor of opening the dialogue.

They just changed the format 2 years ago to include more gymnasts, so I don’t think that is an issue they will think about at this time.

I like the idea.
At Y Nationals one year, we had a girl that was just coming back from injury and she only competed Beam ... and medaled!
We have a girl currently on our team (no, not high level ... Xcel Platinum) who is great on Floor, but her personal best Bar score is more than a full point lower than her best floor score and she averages a floor score 1.9 points higher than her bar score. If this were translated to a Level 10 athlete, she would have no chance at the AA but could possibly get in there with the event.

When they had NIT - event champions could qualify there and it allowed them to get exposure on the national scene.

Has anyone else had a chance to read this yet?

(Disclaimer: I didn't read the entire tome....)

Executive summary of the article seems to be:

Key change:
Athletes that are high performing on one event would have an opportunity to qualify for Nationals on that one event.

Key (positive) results anticipated from proposed change:
Nurturing athletes who excel at one event.
Elevating the level of performance at Nationals.
More athletes participating at Nationals due to some competing one event only.

Who qualifies to Nationals?
Current system: Top 7 all-around gymnasts in each age group.
Proposed system: Top 5 all-around gymnasts and top 2 gymnasts with the highest individual score on each event (excluding athletes already qualified via the all-around).

A long section follows with detailed responses to possible concerns.
(....can be power-skimmed.)

Anyone who has made it through the entire document, please jump in to correct any of this.
(I may attempt it again, but only after significantly more caffeine...)

What was the format before the change?
Only 8 age groups sent 7 gymnasts. The next 3 places went to NIT (which I cannot remember the Acronym but it was like an all-star spot). They competed on Sunday at Nationals. Also event champions could choose to go to NIT. They changed it to have more age groups attending JO Nationals. FROM MY EXPERIENCE as a gym mom, observer, gym office staff, and reader, the NIT session was a great honor to get to go, but was not as highly honored or recognized as the actual Championship. I prefaced that so people won’t get offended, because personally NIT would have been welcomed by both my dd and me. (Now it’s 12 age groups, do they send top 7 or 8?)

I read it in its entirety....not a fan of the proposed changes of dropping AA qualifiers from 7 to 5. I think 7 from the 8 regions is a good number. If you wanted to ADD the 2 high event scorers to the mix , fine but I think an event specialist that wins her event goes to JOs so that would add 1 more. And like txgymfan, I see the larger regions , who already have expressed dismay in the past about high scoring qualifiers being left out of JOs ,being unlikely to welcome this.

I liked the NIT as well as it gave a large #of gymnasts to compete at the National meet setting....but no one asked me..

just curious...how many total girls make JO nationals each year?

8 Regions X 12 Age groups X Top 7 per age group = 672. The ties for 7th in age group also get to go. Last year 681 competed.
Thanks :)

Was just trying to compare it to the number of boys that go. I mean, I knows 8-10 goes to Men's JO nationals, but that is probably similar in number to L10s.....I really don't know lol.
