Men's Artistic Gymnastics
firs off, wow! Kohei is an amazing athlete as everyone can see, but has anyone noticed his grips? Watching a video feed on Youtube I paused on a close up of his hands and he swings with 2 hole grips? Is he swinging Ring grips or even uneven bar grips? Does anyone know for sure?

Whoah, I never noticed this! How bizzarre.

It looks to me like he is using 3-hole grips -- but only putting his fingers through 2 of the holes, and putting his index finger on the outside of the grips.

You guys ever notice Chen Yibing used high bar grips in his recent world gold ring routine.

Why do men use different grips? We don't have a MAG team at the gym, so I have zero experience with that.

It has to do with the shape of the rings and the type of swing.

On high bar, the hands have to be able to slide around the bar. Also, the bar is straight.

On rings, the hands are (in theory) fixed; there's little or no slide. Also, the rings are curved.

What this means is that rings end up needing a thicker but shorter dowel to allow the best possible grip.

That's my understanding, anyway.
