I'm excited to see how this all works out for her. Assuming Jade Carey nabs the nominative spot she's going for (and she probably will) Mykayla would have to show that she's a top 4 all arounder to make the team since I doubt they'll name another vault/floor specialist to the other individual slot with Jade and Simone already in the mix. Alternatively she might try to attend three world cups and beat Jade out of the slot. Although I think she'd have to self fund since I don't believe she qualifies for the USAG funding. Either way it's going to be a tough road for her, but it sure makes things more interesting.

Mykayla is an amazing athlete and i think she has a very high chance of taking 1 of the 4 spots! I think she has proven that she can be an all-arounder in her college career, but i guess we will find out soon enough!

How do you "qualify" for USAG funding? She will be attending the National Team Camps..

Think they mean funding to attend World Cup events, to try to qualify for one of the nominative event spots. USAG set up guidelines for who qualifies to go with funding, would not be feasible or prudent for every member of the National Team to attend. Basically have to have won a medal at Worlds or O's on an event 2016-2019 or won an event at Nationals 2018-19. Here is the document: https://usagym.org/PDFs/Women/Committee Minutes/IEC/iec_appwccriteria.pdf

Her skill set from 2016 would put her soundly in the mix of the top 2 to 6 current USA all-arounders. It just remains to be seen if she has kept up, or can get all of her difficulty back, which has not been needed to excel in NCAA

Thanks, I will check out the document! From what i have heard she has continued to practice her skills, but just didn't do them in comps? Not sure though. I guess we will all see soon enough!

If she makes the team I think it would send a great message to the gymnastics world that you can blend schooling and world-class gymnastics together, it doesn't have to be one or the other.
Years ago when i first learned about what "pro" meant i was very disappointed to find out that these amazing athletes had to give up college.. Why can't they do both!? I agree 100% that this will send a great message to athletes out there! Exactly what this sport needs!

But she said "going home to AZ to train" so I read that to mean she is leaving school?. It is unfortunate that she has to choose one or the other and can not do both simultaneously.

My understanding is she's taking a year off to try for the Olympics with the intention of going back in fall of 2020 assuming she doesn't go pro. It would be extremely difficult to try for the Olympics without taking any time off school simply because of the crazy schedule and wear on her body.

And it sounds like she will go home to train and then go back to school in the fall if it doesn’t seem likely that she has a good chance of making the team. I bet she will finish out the semester (school should be about out for summer anyway) and then play it by ear after she gets back to training elite skills and getting ready to compete those. It seems sensible for her to kind of test the waters and see what she can do.

Her consistency is incredible no doubt. But wasn’t her form in elite lacking, particularly on bars and beam? I’ve heard many people say that it has improved since college, but can she keep the better form with higher difficulty? If Jade locks up a nomitive spot and Simone stays healthy, I think it’s a long shot. There are better bar and beam workers for the US than MyKayla.

Didn't Alicia Sacramone compete for Brown U and as an international elite at the same time?

I saw some video of her on bars and beam( while practicing as an alternate in Rio ) and her form looked great? I would say her bars and beam are better than Jade's...Her floor and vault are incredible. I think Jade is great too, don't get me wrong, but as an all around i feel like Mykayla has the edge.. but we will see.

She did win the AA at Glasgow World Cup in 2016 i wonder if that counts?

It likely won't come down to Jade vs. Mykayla as all arounders. Jade is trying to lock down a nominative spot as an individual. If she manages to (and it's looking like she will) then she has the spot no matter what and assuming Simone stays healthy they'll be two vault/floor standouts definitely competing. Because of the three per country rule that means Mykayla has to add value in other areas (being in the top 4 in the all around or a potential medal on another event) to make the team or be given the second individual slot. And no, the Glasgow world cup medal doesn't meet the criteria. In order to get funding she would need to win an event at this year's nationals and be named back to the national team- basically she would have to beat Simone on vault or floor and place in the top six of the all around. So it's a pretty tall order. I think it's possible, but it's not going to be easy.

I saw that she was going to the national team camp in June. And yeah it does sound like a tall order! Beat Simone?! Has anyone ever beat her? Lol

In my opinion McKayla is a gorgeous gymnast with a fierce competitive side. I don't hesitate to say she can easily be in top 5 in the world. She does not have the preferred gymnast attitude and she has been punished for it. I say go McKayla prove everyone wrong.
