DD took a nasty spill last night off the UB when attempting a squat-on, jump to high bar. DD hands slipped away from the high bar, and falls backwards landing on her elbow/forearm, folding it in the wrong direction. (eeeww!) I'm thankful for 8" mats, DD is thankful that she's immortal (as all gymmies are, you know).
Off to the ER we go, tears continue to slide. Attempts at bravery go unrewarded. After we sit though the mandatory 1 hour waiting room period, I was able to dry the tears, much to the disapproval of an "emotional" parent sitting too close to us.

This woman clearly didn't appreciate overhearing my comments. Things like amputation, large needles, or that the X-ray "zapper" only burns a little at first (but the mark it makes may be permanent). Mission accomplished! I got a smile, a giggle, and even rolled-eyes out of Nastia, and at the same time, a very direct scowl from the adjacent mother who was coddling her 16 yr old son. (A fairly pathetic scene actually)

The good news is the long wait paid off in X- rays coming back negative. No breaks, cracks, sprains, or even burn marks. Just a badly bruised elbow is all, which should take a week to 10 days to heal.

Nastia left the ER with a pink arm sling, a lolli-pop, a dbl shot of Tylenol w/ Codine, and a smile.

Never a dull moment in Gymnastics.

Loving the pink sling and lollipop, hope Nastia bounces back as quickly as she fell. That squat on can be brutal.

Some parents take injuries way too seriously, though for a coddled kid your scary fairy tales must've been terrifying, that 16 year old won't sleep for weeks now!!!

WHat do you mean a one hour wait in the ER, that is a joke surely. If not I am moving down there today with all 3 sprogs. We have to wait at least 6 hours to see any kind of doctor here, and that's usually if you are actually bleeding out or have a bone protruding from your body, otherewise it's a 15 hour wait.

Must have been a scary fall for both DD & you! A trip to the ER is NEVER fun...glad you were able to make the best of it!!! I find a keeping sense of humor always helps ease a tense situation. So happy there is no break or fracture. Happy Healing!!! (((hugs)))to you both!

Glad dd is going to be fine! The weird falls that the girls take sometimes are scary!! Wishing her a speedy recovery!!!

Bog...in my experience, ER waiting times are usually greater than 1 hour (that is pretty good;)). However, 15 hours would cause riots!!! That is the beauty of our system here....though there are many who would like to change it to be more like Canada. I really can't understand why...

I am so glad she is okay!!! DDs friend at her old gym had a horrible fall jumping to high bar (no crash mat underneath) and broke both bones in her forearm AND her elbow, she had major surgery and still has to have another surgery to get the wires taken out of her forearm. :( I am actually relieved that DD hasn't been able to do the jump to the high bar at her new gym, especially since she won't need it for at least another year now. :)

Definitely watch it, sometimes small fractures don't show up on initial x-ray and only show up when they are starting to heal. I have seen it happen more than a few times.

Lots of healing vibes going her way!

Please keep the discussion apolitical.

I got a really good laugh out of this.

Glad she is OK.

DD did the same thing back in December before her first meet. I was actually videotaping her at the time. You can hear her yelp of a scream and everything. DH just saw it for the first time Easter weekend, and it freaked him out. Luckily DD was also OK.

DD still have some hesitance issues sometimes when jumping to the high bar, so remember to have patience!!

Glad to hear Nastia is ok and it was nothing serious.

My daughter also fell at the gym yesterday doing a Tsuk timer. Apparently she stopped flipping in midair and fell on her head/neck . She rolled out of her fall which eased things up a bit but still came home with a bruised forehead and a sore neck. We didn't do the ER think becuase she seemed fine. I am keeping tabs on her today and will take her to the doctor if things don't get better. Did we say gymnasts were immortal?????

Are you serious - 6 hours! I thought the NHS wasn't so good but at least you get seen within an hour (kids quicker - they auto jump the queue)

Poor Nastia - my dd also had a nasty jump to high bar fall. She has overcome the nervousness of doing it but it took time. I have heard of several breaks doing it.

Glad to hear that nothing is fractured or broken! Hope your DD has a speedy recovery.

I'm LOL about that mom coddling 16 yr old. I would have been the one telling the "horror" stories too, lol....

Our local ER is usually good for about 3 hrs.

Yikes! I'm glad she's OK. My experience with emergency rooms is that if I go in there by myself I get seen very quickly. But if I have my children with me, the wait is definitely going to be at least an hour... to get seen... and then maybe another hour to get x-rays.... and then another hour to make sure said toddler is walking correctly and didn't hurt any tendons.... and a phone call to a pediatric specialist.

But then again, my ER experience is limited to two visits so don't ask me.

Hey Tim, not to scare you, but keep an eye on that elbow. They are difficult to diagnose. My non gym dd was 7 yo swinging on a chin up bar in our basement. Lost her grip and landed straight armed on the ground. Elbow went the wrong way and off to the er we were. I could tell it did not look right. I thought it was dislocated and that they would just pop it back in. Long story short it was broken and displaced (not lined up). They put her in a splint and sling and wanted to wait a day to consult a ped. ortho on what do to. Turns out her fracture (super condular humorus fracture of the elbow) is the worst type you can have. All the nerves and blood supply run right through that area plus there are several growth plates. She ended up going to the OR and the Ortho decided to rebrake it and align it and resplint it and see if it holds after 48 hrs. If not, back to the OR for pins. Pins were a last resort with her because they would have had to go right thru the growth plates and he said my dd would a patient of his for the next 18 years. Major follow up. But the setting in the OR worked and no pins. She is fine today. Kids heal quick. Anyway, again just keep an eye on it.

This has not been my experience at our local A&E. Had a 3 hour wait to be seen with a 2 year old with a broken arm. Had a 4 hour wait with a 4 year old (well, same 2 year old but 2 years later!!) to have deep cut in face glued together. You are very lucky to be seen so quickly.

Glad to hear her arm is not broken and hoping she is feeling better today.

Thanks for all the support folks. I let Nastia review this thread yesterday, and she was surprised and a little touched at all the positive vibes sent in her direction from people she doesn't even know. It's truely appreciated.

She's doing fine. Just very sore is all, and being 9, she is of course is milking the injury for all it's worth. Such as: "How can I possibly do homework with my arm like this?!"

Nice try hun.

The swelling has gone down, and a Pedi-Ortho / "bone dude" called yesterday to confirm no breaks or cracks. She hasn't even taken any pain medication since the first day, so she'll probably be back on the bars in about 10 days or so. (14 if I get my way) I think once the novelty of the sling wears off, (such as Friday after school lets out) I'm pretty sure she'll be eager to show how she's "all better" and beg to get back to gym.

Thanks again.

My dd has taken a few trips to ER also, she is only 6. I have learned to appreciate the jokes and cutting it off theory. It is funny how parents can make it worse.

I am so glad to hear that it is not serious. Our ER is less than an hour usually, once we only waited for 5 minutes(of course DD was puking everywhere so I guess that doesn't count.

So glad she wasn't seriously hurt. Those falls off the bars can be scary. Heck, all the falls off anything can be scary! She'll be good as new in no time.

Good that she's worked out how to make the family pay, hormones must be kicking in!!!:D

Glad she is bouncing (!) back so well, amazing the falls they can have and be fine.

Glad to hear your DD is going to be fine. I say I got a chuckle out of your ER comments And both my kids would have too.

Been on the hospital run more than once with both son and Daughter in the gym and its usually a good 12 hours in the hospital total time. From the wait room to the what I call the "lets see whats wrong by a nurse" room is a good 3 hours. then off to the real room where a doctor will at some point come in and see you that could be a wait of another 3 hours. the rest of the time is usually waiting for X-ray to come and do their thing then a good 2 hours waiting for the discharge papers. I have found out that its easier to let the ambulance come and take them then they go right in and out in less than 3 hours and our insurance will pay for the ambulance.
