Nooooooo, gravey is Brown and made from meat juices
I totally agree. It confuses me when I hear Italians talk about gravy. I have to say though, I'll eat their "gravy" any time they offer though.

I just watched the movie Unbroken. He is Italian American and talked often of his mother's food. He talked about her "gravy" in detail.

When I've heard Italians call spaghetti sauce gravy, they're usually referring to a meat sauce that is simmered for hours. Usually it has more than one kind of meat in it, from what I've gathered.

But gymdog, "tomato sauce" is Heinz that you put on chips.

Sorry, "French fries" ;)

I think you lot call it "ketchup".

Who would use puréed canned tomatoes as a sauce on its own?

This can only get worse :))
My mom makes a sauce very similar to marinara using canned tomatoes, a little bit of olive oil and some fresh herbs. Very delicious and a lot healthier than a lot of jarred marinara sauces! :)
