Our 9s are competing today. I thought that you needed a 32 to go to states but we have girls who only competed 2 events all year at states. Those girls also got the qualifying score today to go to regionals.

I know they can declare a specialty and they have to do it before hand but that's all I know.

What score do you need in an individual event to qualify for states? And what score at states do you need in that event(s) to qualify for regionals?

Assume you can do this for lvl 10 as well?

Thanks!

For Region 3, you need a 34 AA or a 9.3 as a specialist to qualify to Regionals as a level 9 or 10. You can not qualify to Westerns or Nationals as a specialist.

We're these perhaps repeating L9's that had AA scores to use to petition in as AA athletes rather than as event specialists? In our state, if they were entered as specialists, they would have only been allowed to do those specific events.

thank you!

we are in MA so i'm in region 6. would love to get region 6 specific info but also interested in how other regions qualifications are vs. ours.

one of the girls qualified for both of her events (i think) and she got a 9 and a 9.2. so i'm guessing a 9 is the minimum. i'm curious what score she needed to qualify for states in these events as well.

our girls need a 34+ to qualify for regionals. i don't know what they need at regionals to qualify for further meets.

one did mostly 3 events all year up until the meet before states and then she didn't do one. she competed the other 2 though which are the same two she did today at states and qualified for regionals in both (i am fairly sure).

the other one competed 3 events randomly at regular meets. i do not know which ones she competed today as the meets scores aren't up yet but she qualified for one.

i am so puzzled! i start to think i have this gymastics stuff figured out and then i realize i have no clue. haha.

It varies per state and region. You should be able to find the info on the region 6 site. Same for state in on the MA site, as long as they keep them updated. I know region 8 switched the qualifying to a 35 for level 9 a couple years ago and switched it for L10 this year.

To qualify to state, you need a 34 AA for most states. You can compete as a specialist if you have scored a 8.5 on the event during the season. Some athletes can petition to go right to regionals due to injury, either with a qualifying score from earlier in the season, or if they competed 9 or 10 last year and had the qualifying score then, but it must be 1 point higher than the qualifying score for regionals. In Region 8, if they are petitioning with a score from last year, it must be a 36 AA. Someone who competed 9 last year with the qualifying scores, but did not compete this year can petition to Level 9 regionals, but not level 10. At the state meet, they must score the qualifying all around or specialist score to advance to regionals. In Region 8 it is 35 AA, and the specialist score is 9.5. Most regions its 34 AA, I believe. I am pretty sure Level 9 specialists can compete at Eastern/Western championships, but I can't find the information to make sure.

thanks! awesome explanation.

i think you need a 35 AA at regionals in our region to go on from there - i think this was just changed. i'm not sure what the specialist score is to move on from regionals.

curious how the petitioning works out. we have a current situation at our gym with that.

i am going to get the whole gymnastics world down just in time for my gymmie to graduate out of it. lol

I read the whole thing (I've read it several times). I couldn't find the wording that said what I was looking for. I know there's no petitioning to nationals, only regionals.

I think they changed the rules a couple of years ago to not allow event specialists at nationals.

It is the top 7 in each of the 16 age groups that move on. (They must be above a 35 though.). This is for all regions.

In our state (NC), you need a 9.0 to qualify as a specialist at state and a 9.3 at state for regionals (R8). It used to be 9.5 but they brought it down a couple years ago. You mention that a gymnast can use a score from regular season to qualify for regionals, due to an injury - I have always heard/read that you either had to get the score at state meet or use a previous year's state/regional qualifying score. But I am sure all regions have different configurations.

They used to allow event specialists at NIT(gymnasts that won their event at Regionals). But NIT no longer exists, they eliminated it to expand the number allowed at JO's.

Petitioning policy is same across regions, its in Rules and polices. Those who can't compete at state must have AA score 1.0 point above the regional qualifying score sometime during that current season or at last seasons regionals, east/west or nationals. Each Region is allowed to set there own Q score. Level 8's with regions that do a percentage of state champ finishers or number per state as their qualifying don't allow petitions, but they do for their 9/10's. Regions that hold 7 regionals would be able to set their own policy.

I just read the updates, and it's a 9.5 at regionals to go to nationals for level 9 as event specialists. Level 10 is a 9.3 for a specialist. "Specialist category at Level 9 Regionals is allowed. The gymnast must declare as a specialist by state meet entry and can not compete in four events at state meet. Qualifying to Regionals requires a 9.50 achieved at state meet. Refer to individual state meet guidelines for state specialist qualifying scores. No petitions allowed. Entry fees for Regional competition remain the same as fees for all around gymnasts."

You are probably right about the qualifying score being from the previous year's state or regional meet.
