Just to share what happened at gym last night, the same situation as the OP, but different method of dealing with it. This was told to me by my DD and I was sitting right there working boutique.

DD and 5 other girls were on bars with one of the stricter coaches. 2 of the girls (one that I had mentioned before that always plays around) were swinging on the bars when they weren't supposed to. He told them to stop, they didn't. He then had them sit down for about 5 minutes and then gave them another chance to come back and listen. They ended up playing around AGAIN, so he sat them down again and they missed the whole bar rotation. No yelling, no belittling, the other girls got to keep working on their bar skills, no tears.

IMHO that's exactly the right way to handle it. Giving a time out to kids who don't listen is a natural consequence. To be safe in gym, you need to listen to the coaches. THus, kids who don't listen have to sit out.
