Hello fellow parents! My daughter fractured her pinky (vaulting of all things) and had 2 pins placed last week. Because the fracture was so unstable the pins will be in for 6 weeks! I was looking to see if anyone’s child had the same surgery and what the recovery was like? DD has already decided she won’t be returning to gymnastics (was 13 and level 9) but wants to continue to tumble and maybe think about acro & tumbling. Thanks for any stories you have!!

My daughter had her pinky pinned (1 pin) over 10 years ago. I *believe* healing relates to the severity of the injury. If your daughter only broke her pinky bones, she should heal fully, but you need to wait the entire 6 weeks so that the finger becomes stable again. I believe my daughter's pin came out at week 5 and it didn't hurt. She didn't put weight on the hand until around week 8.

My daughter had an internal amputation not caused by gymnastics. She lost all blood flow into that finger except for one vein. The good news is that although she never recovered neurological control above her first pinky joint, it NEVER affected her gymnastics. They recommended my daughter sleep with the equivalent of popsicle sticks on either side of the pinky for a few years to keep it straight, but probably because of the neurological damage. She buddy-banded the pinky to its neighbor at all times in the gym until she retired from NCAA. Otherwise, she went about her gymnastics like everyone else. She was a bars specialist. LOL.

What a great recovery story, thank you for sharing! It was just the pinky bone closest to
the knuckle and fracture through the growth plate. We are hoping to see the pin removed at week 6!
