My daughter is 14 and a Level-9. She is the reigning beam & bar State & Regional champ and has been a gymnast for 11-years. Unfortunately, she has been diagnosed with a torn biceps tendon in her right shoulder and her doctor is recommending surgery. Have any of you parents dealt with the same injury?
What were the results?

Never had to deal with the injury personally, but quite a few professionally. Shoulder injuries can be darn hard to diagnose---even a good mri doesn't always show all the structures or damage well. If she's tried and failed(means didn't work) in PT then surgery is about the only option with some good PT after. The last movements allowed in rehab are letting the patient do activities with the arm over the head---yeah not great if you're a gymnast.

If you're on the fence or want to discuss other options ask for a 2nd opinion. If you go with surgery, yes she will miss this season, but should be ok to go for next year.

Thanks for the reply. I'm afraid she is going to have to miss this season.

My friends daughter had a bicep tendon injury requiring surgery. She was initially diagnosed with more of an overuse injury. Saw another local specialist and had surgery a few months back. She is also a L9 gymnast who is 14.
She is having to slowly work her way back in regards to loading her shoulder but the surgery went well.

That's a tough call to make. Coming from an injured gymnast background during my Sophmore and Junior year of high school, I would recommend doing whatever necessary to take care of the injury now so that it's not a problem later. I put off taking care of my injuries and it ended up costing me my college career.

I've never personally had a shoulder injury, but I have heard that they are a difficult injury. I've heard that it is usually a long recovery road.

Being that she's already doing so well, and if college is something she's interested in--it may be a good idea to go ahead and get the surgery out of the way so that she can heal. If she has to miss this season it wouldn't be too bad--she'll be able to come back next season stronger than she is now beacause her should will be better.

I recommend talking to her coach and seeing how they feel about it also--as well as talking to her of course. Be sure to check out all of the options and everything invovled in each option.

Good luck!

I talked to her last night and she wants to get the surgery done ASAP. She told me that the way she feels, she can't win Western's and if she isn't prepared to win, there's no reason to compete. She wants to get the surgery over with and begin training for 2010.

Her plans are to go to OU on a gymnastics scholarship and then onto Med School. She has to be one of the most driven kids I've ever seen. She also runs track and should be ready for that and always reminds me that she has "never lost a race." I'm very proud of her. As a Dad, I'm still nervous about surgery on "my little girl." I'll just have to put it in God's hands.

I wish your daughter the best of luck with her surgery and recovery.

I tore my labrum in December of 2005 and I had the choice whether to get surgery or not. If I didn't get surgery it would mean that the injury would get worse and require me being out even longer.. So I went ahead with the surgery and it was successful. I was back in the gym training for the next season. I competed again in 2007 as a level 10 fully recovered. Although it wasn't my bicep tendon, my Dad actually tore that last year and I watched him go through recovery.

I think your daughter has made a smart choice and I hope the surgery goes well. She seems extremley determined and I don't think she will have a problem at all with getting back to the level she is now.

Thanks. I just talked to the surgeon. I'll post the results as soon as she has the surgery.

Just wanted to say good luck to your DD on her surgery and recovery. I know it will be a long road, but it sounds like the only option and that she is mentally prepared.

The joy of shoulder issues! I had severe tendinitis in my right shoulder during level nine. I had to quit for two months to let it recover :( but I didn't want it to worsen more than it already had.

I hope all goes well with surgery. :)

Surgery is scheduled for Monday morning. Any prayers for Kathryn are appreciated.

Prayers and good wishes being sent your way. You may find your dd has trouble getting comfortable for a few nights after surgery. It just plain hurts to try and lay flat in a bed. Many patients sleep propped up on a sofa or in a nice ez chair for a few days. Hope she feels better very soon.

Good luck to your daughter! I'll be praying for a successful surgery and a quick recovery!

We just got home from the hospital and the surgery went well. Her biceps tendon was ruptured, but they reduced it to fit back in place. Her rotator cuff was also damaged slightly, but they cleaned it up. She's sleeping now, but we are supposed to start range of motion exercises tonight!

Best wishes for a good recovery. Scary to see your baby go through that.
