Word is it’s a torn Achilles...poor girl. As for Sanne, she missed her connections. I read somewhere they told beam judges to hammer the dance.
Will have to watch routine again when available, but on first view I swear she missed her connection in her only jump/leap series. Big hit if so.

is it possible the powers to be have decided to change what wins? possibly return to gymnastics of 15 years ago? Currently, gymnstics seems to be about the big difficult trick and nothing more. No complaints I was just thinking out loud.

Argh...well that was a rough, emotional day 2. I am no longer going to mention any gymnasts names, since everyone I mentioned routing for before the competition has gone down to injury or made mistakes in qualifying that cost them finals. BUT lets just say I am very impressed by the gymnast destined to single handedly bring back the Dorothy Hamil. Love the aggressiveness of her gymnastics and hope she rocks finals.

There was some seriously scary gymnastics yesterday, highlights as pointed out in the first post. But otherwise was like a bad optional meet.

I get the world needing to compete, but maybe they need to have some parameters to compete, or separate categories.

I've always said there should be minimum competencies to compete in meets like Worlds & the Olympics ...not that Susie happens to be the best gymnast from X country and wouldn't even do well in level 9 or 10 meets....

There were multiple moments tonight that I screamed, covered my eyes and felt like I was watching scary level 8 gymnastics. I kept repeating over and over "please don't die, please don't die" I picked up DD from gym and she was able to catch a good bit of the end of floor for the US etc and at one point she commented that one girl (not naming names) "looked like she was TRYING to kill herself!" OMG- this was way too much for me!

And the moment I was screaming the most was when Morgan Hurd went down on that 3rd pass...NOOOOOOOOOO.....it was hers to lose after Smith's mistakes on bars and beam. She's such a lovely gymnast so hopefully she's gotten the mishap out of her system and goes roaring into finals!

And Locklear on beam....note to Valeri, why? If you weren't going to put Carey up on beam for the experience, did you put Locklear up just to rattle her? She is truly a 1 event gymnast, who barely made it into the event finals, so there's that....

How about Jade!!!! So happy for her! And yes, there were some moments that were scary but I also loved how happy some of the girls from the “barely there” countries were when they did well even though they have no chance of finals or medals. Just proud to be there representing their country. Those are awesome moments!

So proud of her. She looked so nervous before that first vault! Hope she gains valuable confidence from qualifying and rocks finals!

And congrats to Ashton for rocking the highest execution score of the entire meet! Way to step up to the plate!

That’s a rather bold statement considering if you add back the fall to her E score, she’d be at (or near) the top E score. If anything rattled Jade, A more likely trigger would be watching the National Champ falter on 2 of the first 3 events, but she certainly didn’t appear rattled from what I saw.

Yep, Smith has break on bars and Smith and Locklear both fall on beam...lets single out Locklear for derision?! Don't get the level of negativity. Thought all USA girls handled everything well, especially considering what chaos this qualifying process has been.

"If you add back her fall to her E score" ...she has not been consistent on beam for a while ( this meet, 2017 P & Gs, Classics, and Olympic Trials) so yes, she has the potential to score well on beam but has not delivered lately on that event...so that is the rationale for my statement, her track record of late.

Choices are slim on a 4 person team. My guess would be that Valeri wanted to allow Jade to focus on her stronger events and not be stressed about beam. He also likely didn’t expect Ragan to fall, so Ashton going up was really immaterial as they more than likely assumed Ragan and Morgan would beat whichever one they chose.

I did not "single out Locklear for derision"... I commented on Smith's mistakes on beam and bars and Hurd's mishap on floor as well . The thread is titled "thoughts.." ...well my "thoughts" were why didn't Valeri prepare his athletes better for beam , or if someone continues to struggle, why not give someone like Carey the experience competing, as she has scored pretty well on the event in the past. Locklear was brought as a bars specialist and she handles that well, and with her history of back issues, I'm not sure it makes sense to keep training her on an event that she doesn't consistently hit, or be in the top 2 in the US.

Question: the top 8 per event go to finals? The first thing my DD checked after practice today was vault scores- if Chusovitna made finals it made my DDs night.
