Coach
Hey everyone

Last thread I posted here was back in August, about my level 4 girls not having a kip (at the beginning of the month, nobody really had a kip). I'm proud to say that 3/4 girls make 100% of their kips now, and the fourth girl makes about 1/2! Thank you everyone who helped me out before! My favorite thing was spotting drop kips with them, we do it everyday as their warm-up (and switched their bar conditioning to the end of bars) and I've seen huge improvements.

One thing I didn't really plan on, what to do after kips? I'm still a new coach, and I'm more of a floor/vault specialist when it comes to coaching, and beam isn't too much of a change from floor so it's only bars where I'm still trying to work out my training program.

I have a level six (who competes a low bar clear hip, and a high bar back uprise into clearhip flyway), and one of my level fives working giants on strap bar once a week. My other level 5 is going to stay level five for next year so I'm working other things with her (kip casts, amplitude on all her skills, back uprises, and switch kips). I'm still drilling kips with my one level 4 who is only half consistent with it. The other three have really skyrocketed in terms of their bar ability since I took over their program with the aid of added conditioning and lengthening bar rotations from 30 min to 50 min. They all have straight arm kips, connecting their routines, and scores went up from low sevens and high sixes to low nines and high eights. Some of their body shapes aren't the best but I've been really trying to work on that throughout all events, and I've seen improvements there as well. What should I do next with them? I've already thrown the flyaway their way (it's a 'B' in the spring optional organization here) and they've all got that conquered after a week.

So what do I need to start working on with them now? Our compulsory competition season is almost over with only one district meet and state left. We'll have from mid-November until the beginning of February before their optional season starts. Thanks again for the help!

Cast handstands! And make sure their tap swings are awesome or giants won't happen very well in the future. If you can, get the little ones swinging in straps in addition to the Level 5 who's doing giants there.

I agree with Bog! This coach wants to open her mind to new ideas on bars too ;)
I agree with JBS, lots of cast handstands. They are usually fun for the kids but also help with strength, and it can take some kids a long time to catch on, so better to start early! And tap swing- both on the high bar as well a on strap bar. Remind them that these will help them get giants and that should get rid of some of the boredom that comes with "just doing swings."
Add to that clear hips, another skill that some kids pick up right away and others take a long time to get the feel for. It's easy-ish to incorporate into a group with a wider skill range because while some are just working on getting the main concept down, others can be moving along to making theirs higher and ultimately going up to handstand. It also helps them with shifting their hands around the bar.
