I need to say, if you know the name of the gym involved in this coach's recent charges, please keep it anonymous, it doesn't need to be said.

So yesterday, a coach at a gym in my area was arrested and is currently in custody (pending a DNA test) for charges of attacking woman on a local running path as well as charges for stalking women at a local community college. The gym took very quick action and fired him immediately, they also took his picture and profile off their website (kudos to the gym for that!)
I also found out today that he has a list of previous charges that involve drug and alcohol related incidents.
My question is, what on the background checks does USAG deem as things that would render someone from not being hired at a gym? I assume once he is fully convicted of these assaults he will be added to the banned members list, but wouldn't the drug and alcohol charges have been reason enough to not hire him in the first place?
I'm not placing blame on anyone here at all, just generally curious what passes a background and what doesn't.

My understanding is that USAG is not involved at all in the hiring process, including background checks. Once someone is convicted of something they can end up on USAG's banned list, but that's about it. Please jump in those who are more in the admin side than I am.

A CORI will list arrests, pending criminal cases and convictions.....so if he had nothing pending and was never convicted, he might have slid by...or explained away something that was there ...ie. "I was pulled over after a wedding blah blah" and hired anyway.

A thorough background check would pick up all convictions, and I guess the gym would have to use their best judgement as to hire/not hire. It is also possible that the gym did not run a background check. Sadly I found this out about our last gym the hard way.

I have been background check by USAG. It was pretty quick but thorough, they picked up addresses I hadn't lived at for 30 years!

It is not uncommon for criminal charges, especially low-level alcohol and drug offenses, to be resolved without a conviction. Exactly how common depends on the state.

In my state in Australia we have something called a blue card, it is illegal to work or volunteer with children unless you possess one.

The blue card checks your criminal history to see if you are suitable to work with children. Drug and alcohol offences would not stop you from getting one. The only criminal activities that stop, you from getting one are those that are related to crimes against children like sexual offences, violent offences, pornograohy etc. you could be convicted of rape and still be cleared as long as it was not against a child. You can be convicted of murder and still get one as long as you didn't murder a child.

Yikes!!!! I can't imagine how the kids/parents at that gym must feel right now.
Right! Oh it has to be so scary, but also so comforting to know that the gym took amazingly quick action to get rid of him (he is also banned from the premises)
Makes my skin crawl to think that just a few weeks ago I emailed them to set up a trial, he could have been working with my DD.
So glad they caught the guy.

It's also disgusting to read some of the comments on the press release and news articles. Some people who know him are saying things like "confessions can be forced, don't say anything negative until we know for sure, he's such a great guy!"
...yeah, so was Ted Bundy

The guy confessed right away to this incident and one similar that happened late last year, as well as the stalking incidents, AND victims have identified him....I think the nice guy thing can be crapped on and thrown out the window at this point.
