Well, our first day of team camp didn't go as swimmingly as I'd hoped. DD has been so excited for this camp, she's had one of those weeks/months when things are really starting to come together. Back layouts look nice, *this* close on her giants, sticking BHS on high beam without a spot, even connecting the dreaded bwos on beam. Then, during a pass she's done a gazillion times, threw a really high backhandspring on floor and stopped herself mid tuck and landed on her wrist. Swelling, pain, tears ensue. All I get is a text from her "Jammed my wrist" I respond "are you hurt??" answered, "IDK". Basically, nothing.

So we ice, elevate, all that jazz last night. Not really wrist but lower forearm is swollen, no bruising. No c/o of pain at rest, hurts when putting direct pressure on it and turning it out away from the body. (like flicking your wrist). No bone sticking out, good pulses and fingers all pink and nontingly so resist urge to run to ER last night and instead toss and turn and take to pediatrician at crack of dawn this am. Meanwhile DD is wreck, after hearing how long it takes girls to get their giants is convinced she will have to start completely back over and relearn a kip. Xrayed wrist and forearm, I'm expecting the worst hoping for the best. I get "well, I don't see an obvious break. Heres a splint. If radiologist sees something else we will call. You wont hear from us otherwise. Or you can call back around Friday to see if he sees some buckle fracture, or a hairline or whatnot. Stay off it." I guess that's sound advice, and maybe I'm just expecting too much, but I'm just as confused as I was before I took her to the doctor. I don't know if it's sprained, strained, or what. I'm not sure if its her wrist or forearm. I feel like a nut taking her if its not broken, but I have a friend who's son works in a ortho hand specialist practice, so I'm taking her on Thursday to be checked there. I want her to stay off of it if she needs too, but I would like some kind of time frame. And to beat all, I'm a nurse so everybody expects me to look at her with my xray vision and diagnose it ( esp hubby). But I do OB so we dont' come across too many broken wrists on a daily basis.

Sorry this has taken so long, and I thank you if you've made it through the end of this but I feel so sorry for DD right now. Her team camp is this week at the gym, she is signed up to go to another camp with her team June 14 and while I think the rest of this week is out for her, I'd like to know if she can go to the other camp. The deadline for final payment is May 31, and I don't want to pay the rest if she's not going to be able to go. Has anyone else ever had this happen? I was just surprised that the doctor wasn't able to give me any more info and I almost wished I'd passed him up and went on to the ortho to begin with, but i was trying not to be super helicopter overprotective mom....

So sorry this happened to her. My dd had a buckle fracture from landing a cartwheel wrong on the floor. Btdt. These minor fractures can be really hard to see on xrays. The ortho (wrist specialist) gave us the option of cast or brace. We chose cast because I knew she wouldn't stay in he brace and would try to work around it. Cast for 4 wks then at least another month before she was tumbling again. She got back to bars and beam right away (but she was a low level at the time). Keep the ortho appt. They will probably take more x rays too.

I would contact the other camp and see if you can get a refund. Two weeks for an injury to heal is not enough time for what day long camp workouts will put it through.
Push for an Mri to get a better answer, trust me waiting for 3 months for doctors to pass you on to the next specialist to finally get an mri ordered is beyond frustrating.

DD is currently still working on healing from a wrist injury, sounds similar to your DD. Nothing on xray but pain with pressure/weight on wrist and turning it. Diagnosed with a growth plate fracture...as I said before NOTHING on xray. Was in a soft cast/brace for about 6 weeks and is now in her first week out of the brace. It's been hard because of not seeing anything on the x-rays, just having to go off of her reports of pain.

Healing time for wrist injuries varies on the specific injury, wait for diagnosis from the hand specialist to make your decision about the camp. In the mean time I would suggest investing in Tiger Paws wrist supports for the future. Wrists and ankles take a toll on gymnasts as they get older. Our HC makes all the girls use them on vault as soon as they begin yurchenkos.

How is the wrist? Did you take her to the ortho yesterday? We're in the same boat... had to cancel the camp DD has been looking forward to for so long, DD is at the gym watching her friends uptraining for the next level while she does lots of sit-ups. Sad about all of the skills that she was "this" close to getting before the injury. It's a real bummer. (((hugs))) to you both.

Thank you to everybody who replied about my dd's injury....it really means a lot to have your support!
So, we went to the ortho hand specialist yesterday. We got great news in that there was no fractures, only a mild sprain and he recommended resting it the rest of this week and let her go back to normal activity next week as the wrist allows with no pain. Just something I don't know too much about as I've never worked ortho in my 18 year nursing career and have only been to an orthopedic doctor since my DD started gymnastics, so maybe someone can chime in.

My DD broke her middle metacarpal bone in her same hand January of 2012 and this is where we went. She broke it New Years Eve, did it while I was at work and didn't tell me she had hurt her hand until I got home at 7 (about 6hrs after injury). She broke it doing backhandsprings at home in the living room, which is another story but she did learn a lesson about keeping gym in the gym. She missed 7 weeks total then, but came back with no problems and no loss of skills. Anyways, this guy has seen her before. He checks her xrays from this injury and while he saw absolutely no fractures and diagnosed a mild sprain, was concerned that her growth plates were already closing because this was not the case on the xrays from the injury in 2012. So he did more tests and scans on her injured hand and also on the noninjured left hand, and it is the same on both wrists so he said it was normal for her. That is was just a little early (she just turned 12). She has had a big growth spurt (well, at least for her) so I wonder if this means she's close to being finished growing? Both her dad and I are short (I'm 5'4, her dad 5'5) and she has always been petite. She is 56 inches tall right now.
