is there a deduction in xcel gold if the gymnast performs a fhs vault and the coach sits or stands on the backside of the vault, but does not touch the gymnast? just curious...i saw this at a meet.

From the Xcel CoP vault deductions for gold, platinum and diamond:" There is no deduction if the coach, when standing between the board and the vault apparatus, makes
contact with the safety zone mat or inadvertently touches the vault apparatus". So as long as he doesn't touch her, i think there won't be a deduction.

the coach was up on the mat, sitting there? Like where the gymnast lands? Or just standing there at the back of the area?

Like imagine if the coach stood or squatted (to stay out of the judges view) on the back side of the vault but on the mat, but did not touch the gymnast or the vault.

We have seen that happen if the mat had been slipping out when the gymnasts land. The coach's weight kept the mat from slipping, so the gymnast didn't have to worry about an additional balance issue (kinda hard to land with the mat moving under you).
