In some places they don't even wear grips! Most coaches require grips at some point in time. It actually might be better if they start early so they get used to them and don't have to relearn all their skills with grips.
I had problems with this recently too. All I can basically say is practice. I needed to learn how to use enough power to kickover. I used to only make it halfway or less and then kept getting better with each try. I know this may not help you much but that's pretty much all it takes.
