I highly recommend this FB group. My golfer son is only in 8th grade, so we have lots of time, but there's a TON of great information. I also bought her book.

It's not just gymnastics: "In 2014, UCLA’s student newspaper quoted Kondos Field as saying she suggested the school’s golf coach add the son of former Bruins gymnastics coach Jerry Tomlinson. He hired Kondos Field as an assistant coach at UCLA in 1983. Tomlinson’s son, Cory, was listed on UCLA’s...
We always try and make a mini-vacation out of travel gym meets or my son's travel golf tournaments. It's a nice combo of vacation/competition. The golf tournaments are a bit different b/c we choose which ones he does as opposed to a set gym schedule. We also live in So Cal, and there is SO...
It's not just gymnastics. My son is a junior golfer and it is rampant there as well, including the recruiting drama. Everything is scrutinized - tournament selection, scores, placement, equipment changes, etc. In fact, in some ways, it's worse because the parent is usually much more...
A slight variation - my 8 year old daughter competed Xcel bronze last season and decided to switch to JO. She was put in level 3 initially and that lasted all of one practice before the head coach approached me and said he was moving her up to level 4. It was absolutely the right move for her...
Back to add that our gym does have some history of moving from Xcel to JO but usually the higher levels. Our head coach took over the program just last sason and has mentioned using Xcel bronze as an entry to competition and getting their feet wet as well as for the girls too young to compete JO.
Sorry if this has been discussed already. I did a few searches but didn't find our situation or the posts were very old.
DD was invited to join JO level 3 last year but chose to do Xcel bronze instead. She has been in gymnastics since she was 2 but really fell in love with it this season. She...
My DD is a first year Xcel bronze gymnast. Their first meet is the first weekend in January and they have not started learning their floor routine. They haven't even heard the music yet. They have been piecing together bars and beam skills but are not putting it all together yet for competition...
Last year it was 6 hours/week and they upped it this year to 8, 3 days per week. The latest end time is 6:45. 8:30 end time would be really hard for my DD - she's 7 and in bed by 7:30. Silver and up end between 8-8:30, so we'll see what happens next year.
DD and I went to the UCLA / Utah meet earlier this year. It was our first college meet and was SO fun! I didn't expect the cheering and music and the floor routines were so exciting
