    Coaches New season worries

It sounds like the things you are worried about haven’t happened yet. Those are my favorite things to worry about too but it’s really better that take a wait-and-see approach. If your job becomes unworkable, you have options and you will figure it out. Good luck!

Parents Increasing elite age from 16 to 18

Just because little girls can do big skills earlier doesn’t mean that they should. The current crop of older elites shows that it is entirely possible for WAG gymnasts to be successful elites into their 20s. Pushing the age back at the top will trickle down to the lower levels and result in a...

Parents Naturally Very Flexible but Struggles with Keeping Muscles Engaged

I took my kid to a PT who specializes in gymnastics. This person assessed his mobility in different joints and gave him exercises to help stabilize his joints. I highly recommend doing this.

Parents Increasing elite age from 16 to 18

I’m a MAG parent. My statements are factually true based on the current USAG rules. Is there a nuance that I am missing?

Parents Increasing elite age from 16 to 18

Every male gymnast in the US is “held back”—no optionals at all until age 12 and no level 10 until age 16. It works just fine to do it that way.

WAG Girls moving to different groups

Every variation is possible depending on the gym. At a smaller gym, gymnasts might have The same coach and the same core group of kids for 10 years. Some gyms have many coaches and many groups and the groups and coaching assignments can change every year or even multiple times during the year...

Parents Increasing elite age from 16 to 18

I should clarify that USAG MAG has a “junior elite” track within the development program that starts at 12 but that is just a more competitive division within the regular development program. Those athletes are still bound by the minimum age limits for each level and aren’t eligible to compete...

Parents Increasing elite age from 16 to 18

In the US, the minimum age for men’s junior elite is 16 and senior elite is 18. This has a dramatic impact on the way that boys and girls are trained in our country development program. In our men’s development program (levels 3-10, roughly equivalent to US WAG levels) we have minimum ages for...

WAG Switching from Xcel to JO

I’m not an expert, but Here are the rules about switching from Xcel to the Development Program (formerly known as JO). B. Athletes whose competitive experience has been in any system (including USA Gymnastics’ Xcel Program) must enter the Development Program at Level 4. C. Any gymnast who has...

    [Meet] Men’s Region2 Championship

I’m not sure if you saw the scores online? I’m really ticked off at how this meet was run. But at least most of the scores are now posted to the website. https://www.mensregion2.com/regionals2024

    Anon Clarification regarding gymnastics track

Are they discontinuing their DP Optionals program after this cohort graduates? Otherwise, where do they plan to get their next optionals team without any 5s or 6s coming up? Seems like they may be doing a gradual transition to an xcel-only program, in which case, there won’t be a level 7 to...

    MAG Giants Without Grips

Update: Now that regionals are over, my son was finally approved for grips. There was some concern among the coaches that the adjustment to grips would interfere with his newer skills but he was up there doing front and back giants the same day he got his grips. He said that he feels way safer...

    MAG New quad

I’ve been getting slivers of info from the minutes from the Men’s program committee on the USAG website. From 2/24/24 d. Junior Program – Bhavsar, Klein, Pakanich, Sargsyan iv. The 2025-2028 Junior Competition manual is being finalized. The compulsory programs are complete, and that portion...

Parents Low to high score progression

I suspect that some aspect of the training at the gym is not working for this kiddo, since she is not making progress. Also, I wonder if the pressure to get a certain score is making her nervous at meets and she is under performing. I think that switching to Xcel or to a new gym would make...

    Parents DP or Xcel?

I would never choose a 5-day per week training schedule for my child, unless there was absolutely nothing else on the planet that would make them happy. Training high hours is dangerous and the opportunity costs are massive. Xcel is the better choice for most gymnasts.

Gymnasts Hard time learning to set my flips due to fear of landing in gap

All I can say is that every single little boy at my child’s gym has the same problem. The gap of death makes them all completely freak out. Can you work on tumbling up to the edge and the just doing a rebound onto your back with hollow body into the pit? Take out the skill and just work on...
