A new this week I accomplished.....

hey everyone, I haven't posted here in months! I just went to my first gymnastics (tumbling) class last night since November. I was very busy finishing up my last semester of school and then was too chicken to go back earlier in the summer. It turns out none of my favorite coaches were there and...

How many hours of sleep does your gymnast get a night?

I recently was looking into this and read that there are the average guidelines for different age groups on how many hours of sleep, but it often depends on the individual. It's about listening to your body and finding your own "magic number". Too much sleep can be as detrimental as too little...

    Do they ever outgrow it?

I'm a senior in college and handstands are also my choice of stress relief during long nights. Also, I have danced since I was two and still can't get through a day without practicing pirouettes, balancing in coupe or passe, or doing an arabesque. When I was younger I'd always do turns in my...

    Splits advice needed!

My advice would be to be patient! Splits can take awhile. For example I had fairly good flexibility from years of ballet, but once I got to college and wasn't stretching and dancing as much I lost both splits (a few in. above ground). In July I started dancing a lot and going to adult gymnastics...

    It's...Nutcracker time!!! LOL

Those are some fun parts! I'm sure she is having a blast! They never ever seem to find enough boys . When I was 11 and 12 I was a party girl and polichinelle boy (mother ginger kid). I loved those parts so much! They wanted me to do some tumbling since I was "lead" polichinelle boy...

    It's...Nutcracker time!!! LOL

In the ballet world we were always told it was bad luck to say that, but for good luck you say merde, which means s*** in French. Now try and figure that one out! haha

    It's...Nutcracker time!!! LOL

I love Nutcracker Season! What part is your daughter? At my dance studio Nutcracker was (I graduated three years ago) always performed the weekend of Thanksgiving so by the time December arrived I cringed every time a commercial with Nutcracker music came on. I still miss being in the Nutcracker...

    Wrist/Ankle pain?

For ankles a simple strengthening exercise is writing the alphabet in the air with your foot. A doctor could probably give you a list of exercise to do daily for strengthening your wrists and ankles. Also, make sure you get a good amount of calcium in your diet!

    This week I accomplished...2010 version

I know what you mean about not being able to go to gym! I haven't been since the end of October because I just got too busy juggling classes, an internship, two jobs, and President of Dance Club . Finals will be over soon, but I go home right away. I found a gym by home that has an adult...

    Parents Team building ideas

I haven't done competitive gymnastics, but I used to do competitive dance. Our competition team would have picnics and BBQs at someone's house or the studio that were alway a lot of fun. When we were away at competitions we would do activities together like making a memory page where we would...

The Pros and Cons of Privates

about prices of privates... out of curiosity I looked up how much one is at my gym and an hour is $85 and a half hour is $55. That's what you get for living in an urban area I guess.

split leaps in level 3 floor routine!^^

At my gym we also will practice split jumps going down a tumble track. This is also good for teaching body control. Besides emphasizing how far they jump (mat or jump rope drill mentioned earlier), try to get them to jump high. In ballet I remember a teacher bringing out things we would have...

Handstand Forward Roll: bent or straight arms

Nicki: That's great you're starting to get the hang of them. I like to think of going into a candle stick position as I come down. I'm still slightly scared of them... I just need to do a lot more of them to get used to it. I'm hoping to get the hang of them soon since a lot of times my...

Handstand Forward Roll: bent or straight arms

Thanks everyone! I'll make sure to tell my coaches I want to learn them with straight arms if they tell me to bend my arms. My coaches brought out a cheese mat once to practice them, but we haven't done that in weeks. My one coach doesn't seem to like to spend a lot of time on handstand forward...

post your gym name for search engines

In NYC I know of Chelsea Piers, NYC Elite, and NYC American Sokol. I've only been to the adult classes at one of them so far, though! Also, at home in the Albany, NY area World Class Gymnastics has an adult class.

    Fears You Have Overcome

I'm glad this thread was brought back because I feel like a lot of us have been expressing fear of skills lately. The problem I have is getting used to the falling feeling like in handstand forward rolls... they freak me out so much! I feel like if I can do them my handstand will be more...

Handstand Forward Roll: bent or straight arms

I've been working on my handstand forward rolls in class. Everyone in the class, even the newbies, have no trouble with them, but I can't seem to get them. When I first did them with a spot I automatically was rolling out of them with straight arms, but the coach said to first do them with bent...
