one of the girls in my group has the same problem, and she did the foam thing and it seems to work pretty well, you just have to get the foam to the right size and it will be comfy enough :)
Maybe show her the Doc.Ali website, particularly the bits about having a one point focus and so on (ie- living in the now, present not thinking about previous experiences etc)
Also just be very supportive of her and encouraging, remind her of what an awesome gymnast she is :)
