WAG Question re P&Gs and the trials

Why are they two nights long? Is it basically two competitions each with the scores for the two nights added together, or is there something different from the first night to the next?
 
With the men it seems to be 2 nights combined. Maybe it is to see how consistent the gymnasts are over time? I know that the final decisions will be in the hands of committees, or martha....lol. So excited for the men! 1 hour to go :)
