Parents Advice to newer gym parents on... medals!

I have some advice to my younger self, so I thought I would share it here in case it's useful to others (it's too late for me, unfortunately.) It relates to gymnastics medals. People have different preferences and styles around what to do with medals. My daughter hung hers on a rack for a few...

WAG 30 for 30 Heavy Medals

Has anyone listened to this season of 30 for 30? It's about the Karolyis. I was wondering if it was worth listening to.

    WAG Medal presentation

Random question. I was watching a random YouTube video which featured a few medal presentations at various US gymnastics competitions and noticed something odd. When the medals were presented the judges did not hang the medals around the gymnasts necks, instead at every comp the judge simply...

WAG AA vs each event medals in Washington state?

This is an odd question...we moved here from CA where my older daughter competed in JO. At each meet they would give medals for each event and then AA. My youngest had her first competition today (JO level 3) and they only gave medals for AA. A friend told me meets her daughter participated in...

Parents Six medals and a FIRST PLACE AA trophy!!!

Puma Jr had only won AA once, and it was L3 in 2014. But today was her day! It’s been her weekend actually! Last night she won first place Silver bars (she is USAIGC Bronze, and a Silver bar specialist) and today she medaled on all four events plus a “beam queen” medal for stuck landing. Both...

Parents How do you feel about 100% medals placements?

I’m just curious to know other parents’ opinions on 100% medal placement in the All-Around. I’m personally not fan of participation trophies (or medals in this instance). I also think it’s more embarrassing to be called up and announced in last place to receive your medal than it would be to not...

    Parents Philosophy about displaying medals?

My DD is going to get her own room next week. I've always kept her shared room with her sister free of gymnastics stuff as sister is not a gymmie. I thought I might surprise gymmie DD with a medal display rack in her new room. DH is not keen on the idea. Thinks displaying medals is boastful...

    Parents Not-On-Wall Medal Display?

Has anyone ever seen some sort of medal display that isn't mounted to the wall? My husband has an irrational fear of putting things on the wall.... My searches are turning up nothing...

    US medal payments and NCAA?

I believe that the USOC pays athlete who medal? Something like $25,000 for Gold etc. Can athletes accept this money and still do NCAA?

    Total potential medals for Simone

ok, sorry if this is a dumb question but I can't figure this out... They keep saying Simone could potentially leave Rio with up to 5 gold medals....but if she wins all the individual event finals, and the individual all around, and the team wins gold....that makes 6, am I missing something?

    WAG Gold Medal Families

I know it'sounds not just focusing on gymnastics, but Aly Raisman is one of the storylines. Anyone else watching? I think it's really good! Seems like a much more realistic portrayal of what elite athletes go through than say Gabby's reality show. It's on lifetime (streaming too) if you...

Parents No medal for Puma Jr....

States were today, and though there were no disasters and nothing below an 8, she is terribly disappointed to have not medaled. She did get her 9 on bars, a 9.025 that still only managed 14th place. Her age group was tough, it would have medaled in some of the other groups. I'm so proud of how...

WAG Should gold medals be awarded first or last?

I have seen it both ways. Which do you prefer? Do you agree with the idea that the first place winner should be on the podium longer? Or do you like the idea of saving the best for last?

    Parents nonparticipation medals

I already thought participation medals were ridiculous. But at Tinker Bell's first meet this weekend, they gave "honorable mention"/participant medals to kids who scratched an event. As in, the kid saluted, touched the equipment, saluted again, and scored a zero. This earns you a medal. Now I...

Parents My kid got medals!!!!!! (Brag)

So so so so pleased for my DD right now! First time she's ever medalled (she has a couple, but from comps where everyone got one :P ) and she walked away with 3 today! 1st place floor, 3rd place vault, and 2nd place team! Ironically she was considering scratching both floor and vault because of...

    ILP Competions, medals?

Hi I was just wondering if the low ILP's in Australia get medals, placings, scores at their competitions. So far in NZ for IDP comps our kids have won medals, placings (all round and apparatus) but this year it is changing to stickers or ribbons and a certificate and no scores/placings. Is this...

    Medals and Ribbons

So on the eve of my first meet of the season grumbling to myself, i was wondering how everywhere else worked. Here none of the regular comps give out medals. at least in T&T. no medals, no loot bags, just ribbons for 1st-8th (and they are usually really boring ribbons). medals are reserved for...

WAG My first ever AA medal!

In my category (intermediate) I got joint-bronze out of 15 people! I honestly was only aiming for top 10 and I'm completely in shock still. Also, a personal best with my floor score! And to think I was going to pull out of this competition a few days ago because I thought it would be a disaster...

MAG My little guy won his first medal this weekend!

I posted a couple of weeks ago about my 6yo, who is in his first year of competing. He had a really rough first meet, but he has made so much improvement during the past few meets. He was so thrilled to get to stand up there on the podium, and I cannot describe how proud I am of him. I'd say...

    Parents Storing Medals/Ribbons?

How do you store your daughter's ribbons and medals? I have a friend who used an award keeper book that she found on eBay that allows you to insert medals, ribbons, and write information. Before I purchase one, I just wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas. Right now, we just have a box...
