Hi there! I was a gymnast for 7 years, and now coach little ones in Oklahoma.

I just started coaching at a gym and their bar set is new and unchalked.

What is an effective way to start a good chalk base for the girls to work with??

First you should spray the bar with water and then you rub chalk on that (I've only chalked a new bar once). After you do that you should have your gymnasts do tap swings and kips on the bar so they can test it and not get hurt.

I would be interested to hear from others in regards to bar chalking as well. We have a set of S/A bars that just won't seem to hold any chalk.

Do others actually "chalk" the bars on a routine basis? How often?
Or do you just let the chalk accumulate from the girls grips/hands?

Thanks.

We just let it accumulate, but I am also interested in any other answers about a new bar. I'm thinking just chalk and spray bottle of water repeatedly?

I know at my gym we have to rechalk some of the bars like every 2 weeks. If the kids arent using chalk on their hands or grips it takes the chalk off. We always spray the bar and rub chalk on it 2. Also the more the bars are used usually the more chalk is on them. So maybe try using the bars more often.
