Ugh. My DD, getting ready to compete the new L6, broke her hand doing ROBHS on the tumble track. The crack/snap was heard by everyone within 20 feet. She just placed her hand wrong. She has a rotational fracture of her 3rd metacarpal, her finger is kind of pointing in the wrong direction. A titanium plate is being surgically affixed next week. Rehab starts immediately per her hand surgeon.

Does anyone come back after this?

No answers on injury or recovery but I am super bummed for her. Hoping for the quickest recovery possible.

All I can say is that I have seen girls with some serious injuries come back. Hope she heals quickly and is one of those who comes back quickly!

I'm so sorry! It only takes a moment for them to get hurt, and so much time to recover. :(
I am sure that if she follows doctors orders and is determined to come back, she will.

Not sure how this applies, but my (adult) friend broke her ankle badly and have to have a plate. The doctor told her the plate would eventually come out once her bones were healed to full strength. The plate was only there to provide stability for a LONG-TERM healing process. But, she expects her ankle to be good as new eventually. On another note, my son's friend who is 10 broke his collarbone 3 weeks ago. This week's x-ray shows new bone growth. He should be out of his brace in another two weeks and released for basketball. Kid's bodies have an amazing ability to heal themselves!!!!!

Her hand doc (sports med hand specialist for the White Sox and Chicago Bulls), said a plate will hasten her healing because she can start rehab right away. She want to try to be competition ready in 2014.

If they did pins, she would have to be immobilized for 3 weeks and have two separate procedures one to put the pins in, and one to take them out. He said that rehab goes on indefinitely when you do that type of surgery.

If she want to try to go back, I support her. I think she could make it happen.

she'll recover. approx 4 months. shouldn't have any further problems. bars will take a bit longer because of 'grip'.

i actually know a gymnast that did this twice! on counter swings on bars. 1 year apart from each other. same hand and finger. she's in college now doing D1 gymnastics and has not had any further issues. :)

Ouch! I hope she heals quickly. I would imagine that she could come back. I have seen people come back from similar injuries.
