Thank you for posting this! I had heard there would be changes and had been looking for them. I’m new to the site but I saw some of your earlier posts. Congrats to Puma Jr! My DD is a bronze gymnast as well. She got the bronze diamond score at States and was .175 away at Worlds (without her kip—she just got it this week) so I’m guessing she’ll ultimately be a bronze diamond next year. Like Puma Jr, she got the trifecta (1st at States, Regionals, and Worlds) in vault (not bars). I had heard that they might raise the bronze diamond score to 36.2 or 36.6 and I’m kind of glad they didn’t do that. Excited by the possibility of saltos on the floor. Big changes for C2, which make sense. If those changes had been made last year, my DD may have been a C2 this year instead of Bronze. (She was a C1 last year.) What do you think of the changes?I know this doesn’t affect too many, but for anyone interested, USAIGC just added some skills that can be done in some levels. I’d love to discuss with any other IGCers! View attachment 7332
Thanks! I couldn't think of a more gymnastics focused-name, so I just went dragon. Bars are definitely Viserion Jr's weakness, so maybe these changes may be ideal for her. I wouldn't say she's close to silver though. She heard the same thing about the goal of BD being its own level. Our gym moves kids up slowly too so I don't think she'll be moved until she achieves the necessary score. I had heard that a cast to handstand might be allowed in BD now too (if it's not already). Our coach is involved in the rule committee and had V Jr demonstrate the new C2 vault at Worlds for the rest of the committee so he probably knows more...I'll keep you posted if I hear anything.Yeah! Welcome fellow IGCer! Puma Jr also got the one score at States, but she is under she impression that BD will be truly its own level now and the coaches can just put them there? And I also heard one 36.4 would “force” you to BD. But, the only thing I know 100% for sure is what I posted above. I haven’t heard from the gym yet (which is fine-I think they are wise to figure it all out first before passing on info) but they are talking to the kids about it a little. It will be interesting to see how it affects us. Our gym likes to be fairly competitive and moves kids up slower than many IGC gyms. What do I think of it? I think overall it’s probably a good move for the program. I think USAIGC wants to up the ante a little, yet still stay true to their identity. I do think the BD rule changes are good for a kid that may be close to Silver ready but not quite on bars, but unfortunately my kid is the exact opposite. Lol So selfishly this really isn’t great for Puma Jr, but I’m quite sure that wasn’t their main concern! LOL We will see! Keep me posted if your hear anything! I’m very curious....
ETA: Nice moniker, by the way. You would appreciate our Xmas card last year.
Yes please do! CHS has been allowed in Bronze (so also BD obviously) already. Puma Jr was darn close at Worlds. Definitely within 20 degrees of vertical. It’s free hip to HS that is new for Silver. That wasn’t allowed before (not that Puma Jr can do it anyway Lol) Thanks for the info! Thanks! I couldn't think of a more gymnastics focused-name, so I just went dragon. I agree that I read this as there are new skills that CAN be done in some levels, but the REQUIREMENTS for each level stay the same, with the exception of the CII vault. But I assume some gyms will make their own requirements. Our gym already does that. Like all of our Bronzes do a full turn on beam even though only 1/2 is required. And Puma Jr was not allowed to be a Silver bar specialist until she could connect giant-giant-flyaway to a routine. I would guess our gym will do something similar for BD. My big question is whether or not BD is truly its own level now. Like do you HAVE to score into it (Puma jr says no-coaches can just put you there) and is there a mandatory score into BD from Bronze (Puma jr says yes, one 36.4) but I have no proof of these things! It’s just what my 11 yr old said! Lol Also...can one specialize in Silver if they are Bronze or do you have to be BD? If BD is truly its own level,I’d think one could only be a Silver specialist from BD... Again, it will be interesting to see how this plays out!I’m interested in these rule changes too. I’ve only officially heard about these changes through CB.
My dd competed C1 last year and as far as I know, she will compete C2 this upcoming season. I agree with you @Viserion, this does seem like lots of changes for C2. Since the beginning of summer training, my dd’s training group has been working on vault handspring over stacked mats and on bars a squat on. I assume bar change allowed means that it’s not required. I’ve read on CB that often a simpler, cleaner routine will beat a more difficult routine that’s not performed as cleanly. It makes me wonder if gyms will choose to have their gymnasts compete the more difficult skills if that could potentially hurt their scores.
I agree...these with the exception of the C2 vault, these updates don't change the requirements and it will be up to the gym/athlete. My gym will probably want their athletes to do the cleanest routine, so I'm not sure how many of the optional skills they'll adopt, at least in C2. And John, yes, I definitely agree...upper levels need more younger competitors. Our younger Golds have so little competition. I hope this helps.I agree that I read this as there are new skills that CAN be done in some levels, but the REQUIREMENTS for each level stay the same, with the exception of the CII vault. Unfortunately, I have. I am way too unanimous to comment specifically, but this is absolutely an issue.I agree...these with the exception of the C2 vault, these updates don't change the requirements and it will be up to the gym/athlete. My problem with the Bronze/BD levels is that some teams do not move their Bronze girls to BD when they achieve the mandatory move up score (35.8 twice). There were girls that Viserion Jr competed against that were scoring 36s all season and then were entered in States as Bronzes. The meet director contacted them and insisted that they compete BD. But then, in Worlds, these girls competed as Bronzes, not BDs, even after competing BD at States! I believe the teams were scolded about this when the meet director heard about it but I think it's a bit unfair. Mrs. Puma, have you seen this?
I believe that is the new Xcel Silver vault (and the proposed level 3 vault)? Is C2 comparable to those levels on the other events as well?I did hear from a reliable source that Diamond is truly its own level now, but one 36.4 at Bronze would mandate a kid into Diamond. And there is a video of the new CII vault. http://usaigc.com/SitePDFs/IMG_0787.mov
It was always allowed.Allowing USAG athletes in IGC competition was something we always experienced prior to two years ago.
It is ONE of the possible Xcel Silver vaults... they can also Roundoff over.I believe that is the new Xcel Silver vault (and the proposed level 3 vault)? Is C2 comparable to those levels on the other events as well?
Yep... We had that issue at YMCA Nationals in Xcel Platinum too... One TEAM (well, 4/5 of them) competed as JO L8 during the season but competed Xcel Platinum @ Y Nationals. 2 of the girls even competed L8 at Y Regionals ... in the same state that hosted Nationals.Sound likes USAIGC directors are not doing their part to maintain the rules they laid out for competition. Sorry to say but it seems like manipulating rules to get the upper hand in competition is part of gymnastics at every level.

Not to get too far off topic, but I would love to see that vault at L3, or a handstand flatback over the table to stacked mats. Anything that would make the transition from L3 vault to the L4 FHS vault less enormous. Watching our new L4s last year, vault seemed to be the biggest challenge for all of them.
Thanks for posting this! The girl in the video for the CII vault looks very familiar. Do you know if two 35.8s also still necessitates the move to Diamond?I did hear from a reliable source that Diamond is truly its own level now, but one 36.4 at Bronze would mandate a kid into Diamond. I was told no. A coach can just put a kid into Diamond like any other level. And no, the 35.8s do not matter. Only one 36.4 in Bronze forces one to Diamond. Thanks for posting this! It’s not an exact science, but yes, I’d say CII/L3/XS are fairly similar.I believe that is the new Xcel Silver vault (and the proposed level 3 vault)? Is C2 comparable to those levels on the other events as well?
