I know there are so many questions about rips on here already, but I keep ripping on my wrists. I wear dowel grips with normal wrist bands underneath. I have had these grips for about a year, and haven't had any problems until that past few months and now it happens all the time. I love the grips except that they cut me! Everytime I get on the bar I start to bleed from it re-cutting me.
Any suggestions on how to reduce the wrist rips?

This is extremely common, especially at higher levels. You may have to just bite the bullet and tape your wrists under your wristbands.

No idea if this is your problem, but I used to get them ALL the time. Turns out it was because I didn't wash my wristbands enough! When they aren't soft and fresh anymore, they can be really rough against your wrists, and cause them to rip, bleed, etc.

Tape under my wristbands hurts because I don't have full range of motion in my wrists.
And gymnastbeth- now that you mention it I haven't washed them in a while... oops. I will bring them home tomorrow and wash them and see how they feel. I didn't think the chalkiness would rip them, but it might be the cause!

oh man, i wish you guys would remember to wash those things. our gyms would smell better if you did.:)

and so would you....all....:p

What lots of people do for wrist rips is to tape a balloon to your rip, and then put your wrist bands over that. I've done it before and it really helps!! And you can tear a small peice of a pit block and tape that to your rip too, but it doesn't work nearly as good as the balloons do. I also watched a video of Bridget Caquatto, and she said that she puts the little gel things that people put in their heels under her wrist bands, and she uses a lot of pre-wrap because she used to get wrist rips all the time, and she said that that is what works for her!! Hope this helps.

gymfan4ever i know someone who does the ballon things. you take some neosporn and but it on the rip and then a piece of a ballon. then you tape it so it doesnt move. it works really well.

There is a product that our gymnasts use.. it is made for runners for chafing.. I can't remember what it is called, but it comes in a deodorant type stick.. looks like deodorant. They put it on and it is AMAZING!!! Any drug store or running store should have it.

Are you referring to Body Glide? I love it but have never used it in gymnastics since I'm only a parent. We went to Disney World in August a couple of years ago and used it everyday. No blisters or chafing anywhere. I still use it if I'm going to be doing lots of walking especially in really hot weather.

You could also try this new thing called RipGuardian, its amazing and i can't even tell i have a rip when i use it. basically its this wax like thing that you put on your rip, then you put a bandaid and tape over it, then your wrist bands/ grips, and it puts all the rubbing of your grips on the wax, not your rip. I got some for christmas, and i use it when ever i get a rip. you can also reuse it. heres a like to it: RipGuardian its a little expensive, but totally worth it.

I've gotten these a lot before, and its pretty much always because my wrist bands aren't pulled up enough. If you can't pull them up any more, I might invest in those really nice long ones, its worth it in the long run.

Also, I ripped on my wrists about 6 times in a span of about two months and I can tell you that tape does not help. All you can really do is maybe put a strong band-aid over it, pull up your wristbands and try to ignore it until your calluses form.

wrist cuts

is it normal to get actual slices on you wrist from you grips. I have actual cuts..not rips..wondering if I need different grips
