Hey everyone... Long time since my last post. Well DD (9) is dealing with something and assistant coach suggested I take her into the doctor. Not looking for medical advice... More like insight into personal experiences/similar issues, and/or advice as to what type of doctor makes most sense. DD is level 6/7... In case that matters...

DD is having pain/discomfort in the front area of her hip area. Apparently it's been going on for a couple weeks but this is the first I heard of it. She even was off last week while we were on vacation, and apparently it was bothering her again tonight. She says it hurts the worst when she is punching on the vault and running.

Obviously don't want to put off anything, I'm just concerned a GP might not be the best fit? We really don't have any sports docs in the area... Wondering about a chiropractor maybe? A Google search (I know... I shouldn't webmd this stuff...lol) suggests maybe hip flexors?

Any insight would be great! Thanks in advance!

My suggestion would be to go to the nearest sports ortho. We are lucky enough to have 2 in our area, both of which have walk-in hours.

If there isn't a sports ortho, or they can't get you in quickly, I would see my ped. Maybe they can suggest someone or get you in somewhere quicker.

I would see the closest to a sports Doctor you can find to rule out something more serious. Assuming it isn't something serious -- it sounds like hip flexor so to me as well -- then a Chiro would be a great choice or a manual therapist or sports specialized physiotherapist.

We are fortunate enough to have a chiropractor who is also a trained physical therapist, so she is always our first stop for aches and pains!

I would go to an ortho that deals with sports. She probably will need PT. It sounds like her hips may have gotten out of line. It's common with events like vault. It causes a lot of pain until corrected.

If you don't have an orthopedist available, you might be able to start at PT. My daughter's physical therapist is somehow able to evaluate injuries and even do a couple of weeks of PT before a doctor visit is required. A PT may also be able to point you to the right doctor.

I know a pediatrician posted recently that she is able to diagnose sports injuries, but we had the opposite experience with our pediatric practice. The pediatrician we saw immediately threw up her hands and gave us a referral to a random orthopedic surgeon who turned out to specialize in joint replacement for older adults, which was not terribly helpful. I had to find a pediatric sports medicine specialist on my own. It turned out to be a simple and obvious diagnosis that didn't even require imaging. For this reason I will never again bother with the pediatrician for injuries. (If the one who posted here were our pediatrician, though, I'd totally start with her!)

I have a fabulous sports orthopedic who is currently fixing my very bruised hand(bone bruise) so if you can find one that's where I would take her.

Your pediatrician may have some suggestions. Also, depending on your insurance, you might need a referral from them anyway, so I would start there.

Ended up taking her in today to our GP. Thinks it's certainly hip flexor issue and gave us direct referral to PT. Just need to set up an appt...

Also have a chiro appt scheduled for tomorrow too!

Ok, I'll play.
So my hips get so out of alignment that one is noticeably higher than the other if you put your hands on them. Have your child (in her undies so you can see her hip bones clearly) put two fingers on each hip and with a ruler go across (if you can't eye it well). If they aren't even, bingo, you have won! :( Well not really...but you have found a problem that truly can help with chiropractic.
I am VERY hard on my body. Even though I have never done gym, I go through a pair of tennis shoes (with orthotics mind you) every SIX months. Oh and btw...I don't run either. I pound the pavement literally. And when my hips are off....they hurt like hell. Hell. I also start veering to one side more when I walk to counter balance the "offness," lol.
I hope my story is helpful. Chiros rock, and yes I hate going. Hate it! Love hate relationship for sure, because using "force" is the only way it works for me. But dang if it doesn't work.
Good luck!!!

Well DD is going to be bummed... First PT appt is 9/22.... That's a LONG time to a gymnast on restrictions. They noted leg weakness yesterday too when they did a strength check. But doc didn't check the hips. It's her 'strong' leg... The one she punches with etc.

@duyetanh... That sounds awful! I often feel my hips/pelvis get out of whack too... But not to that extent! Usually pain accompanied by one leg feeling longer than the other... Like it needs to pop or something. And hurts to walk, run, sleep lol...but I got nothing on you!

Keeping the chiro appt today. Maybe they make sure all else is aligned for now, but really think PT will be ultimately most helpful. Stinks living so rural sometimes... 2 weeks for an appointment isn't ideal!

Benefits of healthcare in USA we have been waiting in the uk for my dd to get her back sorted since 18th of June we have an appointment for October 26th!

Oh my gosh.... I really have nothing to complain about.... [emoji17].... Best wishes for your DD!!!

I highly recommend chiro care as well. Things being out of alignment can cause muscle issues. Withe the tilted pelvis, it's usually sacral isntability. I lived with hip pain for years before finally going to a chiro. I now go 1x/month and live pain free! But if I skip a couple of months, I have muscle pain and hip pain from things twisting out of alignment.

So glad she feels better! Bear in mind that the adjustment likely won't last forever. She's been compensating for a while and he body will want to ease itself back into the former position. So she will likely need to have routine care for a period of time. I would still go to the PT too -- often that only takes one or two visits and you will have stretches and exercises to do on your own.

Yep. When I first found out what was going on, I seriously had to go more often...because your body slips back to what it knows and fights against where it should be. But if you stay on it, it will end up being less visits...I too go once a month...when I found out, I seriously went 3 times the first week, then once the next week, then 2 weeks.....but it is huge. Truly improved my quality of life. So glad to hear it, and definitely go to the pt!
