It doesn't look too bad to me - I think it's more the way that she's standing. I have a long torso and my leos often end up being quite high in the legs, even the long ones. When I make my own I cut them long and with low cut legs, but that does tend to emphasise the fact I have a long torso and short legs!

It's all fashion anyway, if you look at old videos on youtube you see all kinds of variance at different times!

I don't like the high cut Leo for this sport. I think it is too much skin for this kind of activity and the girls are all young! But I do agree that body type matters. DD has the regular cut Leo and on her it is very standard cut and pretty low on the leg. Her friend who is very thin and long, it goes up quite a bit more. Same Leo.

This will be our second season wearing Alpha Factor team leotards are high cut and resemble this picture. The HC wanted to move away from the "boy cut" leotards and have the girls wear a leotard that is more "modern" and "feminine." I don't necessarily hear a lot of the girls complaining, but almost all of the parents do. Especially ones that are new to the gym and not used to this cut. Personally, something in between would be perfect.

I am with Lucy. I think it is the way she is posing. When I was watching, I didn't think it looked bad at all. In fact, this was my favorite Leo of the competition.

I agree that the pose isn't helping but competition leos ride up with the slightest arm movements. I've watched many girls leave the apparatus and pull down their leos. According to my daugther, this was the judges' favorite leo at the competition. How she knows, I have no idea but that's what she told me.

I agree with the others that it is likely the pose. And, it's GK - in general, I don't think GKs ride up? I'm not aware that you can get different leg cuts with GK either. ?

Well IMO if the leos ride up so easily, or if it is her pose, they should get a longer cut to be safe, right? Yeah that didn't make sense to me either.... lol. But I think it is too short.

When I watch college gymnasts I always think, "she should have ordered that leo in the next size up!" I have heard that the high cut leg makes the legs look longer and lines look prettier. I think it just looks like the leo is too small, but my perspective is that of a mom with daughters and not that of a judge, so what do I know?

You can get different cuts with GK. There is standard and modified... our team always got the modified and it was more modest.
I know that there is some rule somewhere about not being cut above the hip bone... It almost looks like her leotard is a little too small - possibly should have ordered the "long torso" option.

I know we've had threads about sizing for leotards for our kids. I know they are supposed to be tight but I was looking at photos form US Classic and one I saw one that concerned me. It seemed too high cut and barely covering important parts. Is this how it is supposed to look?

'It seemed too high cut and barely covering important parts.'
I think it's more of a personal preference sort of thing. As some have said, it may just be that pose at that moment in time that bothers you. At the end of the day, the leo did it's job. It covered her 'important parts' as you put it, it looked nice, and gave the appearance of a long body line and legs. I think if you check out some pictures of both male and female gymnasts, divers, swimmers, beach volleyball players, etc. you will see that it is pretty much across the board. I guess in the end, we see what we are looking for.

So "boy" equals modest, but "feminine" means more skin showing????

And we wonder what is happening to our girls self image and the way they dress. ~sigh~

Indeed, these were the exact words our HC used, and I even cringed hearing them. Not knowing her, you could interpret those words to mean something they didn't. As a former college gymnast, our HC wanted to bring more of a college look to our team. In her opinion, the college style/cut leotard looks more feminine (long body/leg line) and modern (trending) than the typical style/cut one would see in USAG. I guess it would be the same comparison you could make with hair. Hair up in a bun at the crown of the head is more pleasing to the eye (longer neck line) and more modern (trending) than hair that is pulled back in a ponytail at the nape of the neck.

As far a leotard trends go, here's an interesting link:

one leo that I found to be way more revealing than I would want to see on my DD is that of Catalina Ponor during FX at the London 2012 Olympics. Shes a wonderful gymnast, but that leo is way too revealing for me.

I watched a video of the same athlete. It is not just the way she is standing. It is considerably higher cut than most leotards I've seen. There are a couple points where it seems like you see too much of this little ones tush.

Here is the video:

I feel like there is a natural bend that defines the line between the leg and the torso and the leotard should hit there.

Here's her teammate. I still don't like the fit, almost like there is not enough fabric across the backside. It starts out looking okay, but then it seems to not stay in place. Maybe it's the fabric this leo is made of?

i feel bad talking about her specifically like this. if her mama is on here, i'm sorry!

that being said, i would not approve of that cut for my young daughter.

I guess in the end, we see what we are looking for.
Really?!? What do you think I am looking for?
I've been watching gymnastics for 30 years. This is one of the few times Ive seen a leo fit that bothered me. I saw a video before I saw a photo. I am not looking for something when I am watching other than great gymnastics. It was distracting to watch a little girl in a leo that seemed to not fit properly. I was struck by it, partly due to all the leo fit discussions here, which led to me asking about this one.
