WAG Creepy Nassar Video

I was just browsing conditioning videos on youtube and ran across Nassar's Youtube channel in the suggestions. Well I clicked a few of his videos and this came up. Skip to 2 minutes, he is yanking on this girls leotard in a very unnecessary way. Supposedly to demonstrate how the ankle twists or something? Which makes no sense btw. First of all why would he upload this, but since he did I can't believe no adults found it questionable.

First of all, it's clear he is alone with the gymnast because he's operating the camera himself. Second, that angle isn't appropriate for really demonstrating how to stretch for sever's. My daughter has sever's and the video I found helpful was filmed out in the middle of a gym floor and from angles that actually made sense (GymnastCare). Using the leotard as an analogy of how the fascia can be worked to alleviate tightness wasn't necessary.

he wasnt alone. He was talking to the person working the camera... and he was just changing the angle when the person didnt "get" what he was saying. The camera did adjust while he was on camera is the only reason I know this.
Still so wrong in so many ways.

Good catch. I’m obviously not a video person ;)

ETA: I didn’t watch the whole thing either. Couldn’t stand the sound of his voice.

No need for the crotch shot angle at all.

I didn't take issue with that. Filmed from the side you wouldn't be able to see the leg angles. Yeah they could have filmed from the head instead but I don't think it was intentional.

I made the mistake of clicking on the gluteal muscle video. I feel like I’m going to be sick....

I saw nothing wrong with that video. It was a woman doing the demonstrating or whatever. But the Severs video should have DEFINITELY raised some red flags with USAG. The eye-closing was so creepy and matches with Aly Raisman's accounts of weird things he would do.

I see that it was a woman now but with him talking it threw me off. Thank goodness! That’s what I get for watching from a phone screen plus I didn’t watch much of it.

I am going to preface this with the obvious - Nassar's abuse is wrong in every possible way. There are absolutely no possible excuses that would make his actions acceptable.

Having said that, I did not find anything wrong with this video, including the Leo analogy (and him closing his eyes, which many therapists and doctors do to visualize a part of the body they are working on). I have watched many if his videos over the years and I rewatched several when all the gymnasts came out. I did not feel the videos were done in a perverted way. I think it is easy to read into all this now that we know about the abuse but that doesn't mean that everything he ever did was done for some perversion. He was the team doctor for many years because he was very knowledgeable in sports medicine and became an expert in gymnastics in particular. Coaches all over the US search out his expertise on difficult cases. He was so good that I fear *many* people over looked warning signs that should have been apparent to anyone on the lookout. But these videos have helped a lot of gymnasts, PTs, coaches over the years and I personally do not feel he was making these videos for some perverted fantasy. He was a leader in his field and was trying to share this knowledge, while self-promoting himself as a leader.

However, I do think the videos should be taken down and someone else should make similar videos, correcting for potential positioning irregularities. Having the videos there just makes it harder for all those who were abused by him or who know someone who was abused by him. And the gymnastics world needs to wash themselves of any/all reference to him.

Gymgal I agree with most of what you said and don't like the way people are nitpicking everything about his vids. I do agree that his video content was legit medical advice. The Leo thing jumped out at me as being very weird but I could be wrong.

this leo thing is a very common way to demonstrate how facia work. i have seen it done (with fabrics of all kinds) at varies occasions at different workshops and seminars. i think people are reading into this because of what else this guy did. his crimes are the problem not some medical advice videos. the cultur e of obedience (!) in the us and especially in gymnastics is the problem. there are still people in that country believing that it is okay to slap a child, that it is okay, to yell at a child or that children should never talk back, but say "yes, sir" and carry on as ordered. this facialiates abuse. not some medical advice videos of a doctor who also happens to be a criminal.

Maybe on the surface he was giving medical advice, but IMHO it is impossible in retrospect to go back and separate anything "good" that he did, INCLUDING his treatment of my own child which did solve her physical issues at that point, from who he really was underneath. Because all of the abuse was allowed to continue because of the elaborate front he created as a caring, knowledgeable doctor. Every time he went above and beyond to fix an ailment, volunteered his services without pay, every time he offered to come in on lunch to see a gymnast or see an athlete in his home, every time he put some video out showing how to do a procedure...it was ALL a front. It all became a purposeful cover with the inner knowledge of what he had done, and that he'd probably do it again, the next time a vulnerable girl with a hip or back injury walked through the door. I refuse to separate the issues, and legitimize ANYTHING he did, because this video was part of the way he groomed the entire gymnastics community into believing he was someone special, someone who "only wanted to help". Puke. My dd was possibly one injury away from being a victim, as were so so so many athletes. We've had to address that. at home, because even though she wasn't physically violated, she feels deceived. So do I.

While I can see how watching them at the time was a heck of a lot different from watching them in retrospect and didn't seem creepy, no one knows what was in his head while his eyes were closed but we now have 140+ girls worth of evidence that it was likely pretty nasty in there.

Everything about him makes me ill.

ETA - sorry, not mad at your comment, just disgusted.

Okay I stand corrected. I guess I jumped to a conclusion because of the surrounding events. I am sorry.

Maybe the mods could remove the thread because I don't want to spread false information.

I agree with this. It was hard to watch even two minutes of the video. I felt sick watching him.

No, I totally get where you are coming from. And people, like you, who had personal interaction with him have an added perspective that others, like me, can't have. I appreciate your sharing of your story.
