Thanks so much! That's incredibly helpful!

    Parents Diving?

First day of lessons went well -- a lot of the motions are similar to gymnastics. I've been having a hard time finding a good online resource on diving, though. The AAU website explains the dive groups, but doesn't explain what counts for them (is a tuck jump a dive?). I was finally, almost...

    Parents Diving?

Thanks! I found a local dive league that does AAU competitions but has a lesson-only group that sounds perfect. We'll see how she likes it. I'm not sure how competitive our high school dive team is, but I do know cheer and dance are very competitive. We don't have high school gymnastics...

    Parents Diving?

Does anyone have experience with a gymnast without much competition experience moving to dive team in high school? My 12yo competed Xcel bronze (and just finished 6th grade), and she'll continue Xcel for at least another year or two. She's done several years of recreational gymnastics off and...

Parents Thoughts on preteam until JO4?

I think the idea at this gym is to have the kids who would otherwise do JO3 have another year of preteam, rather than skipping girls from preteam over 3 to 4. It's basically making level 3 noncompetitive but not shortening the process. Was that your experience?

Parents Thoughts on preteam until JO4?

A gym in our area that we would consider seems to be dropping JO3 team and making preteam longer, then starting at JO4. I am wondering if anyone has thoughts on this approach or experience with it. DD competed XB last season so not competing for a year would be a hard sell, but there do seem...

    Parents Timing for level changes

Thanks, this is helpful. Apparently kids normally move up June 1, but with DD starting April 1, it's too soon for the gym to say whether she'd move or not or if so, when. Your guidance is helpful in getting a sense of when would be too late for competition purposes.

    Parents Timing for level changes

How long before a season starts does your child know if she is competing in a certain level? My daughter is just now trying a preteam group with a "we'll see" attitude as to whether she moves to JO3 (which is fair and fine with us; she competed XB so is ahead on some skills and behind on...

    Parents Xcel Bronze to JO3?

Thanks, this is really helpful. Vault looks the same. Floor is her strongest and should be okay. Beam worries me a bit -- is it a big leap from a L2 handstand dismount to L3 twisty-thing? Otherwise they look pretty similar. It's bars that are most troubling, because her bronze bars routine...

    Parents Xcel Bronze to JO3?

DD7 might be able to try out for her gym's JO3 team in May; she is now finishing her first season of Xcel Bronze. I'd love to hear from coaches or parents who have seen girls make this transition. What are the biggest hurdles? Bars, I'd guess? Anything she could do at home to improve her...

Parents Return to developmental after one season of Xcel?

Thanks, this is helpful. She's scoring in the high 8's in everything pretty consistently, so normally a bit over 35 overall, but 37-38 is typical for the top spots. I think current gym is pretty supportive and laid-back in Xcel and don't think they'd be jealous or weird about her preparing...

Parents Return to developmental after one season of Xcel?

She likes recreational competitive gymnastics, but she wants to do reasonably well at it. I floated the idea of going back to her old gym and she's not sure. She wants to continue gymnastics in some form, but not sure of the path. Definitely not JO track.

Parents Return to developmental after one season of Xcel?

My 6th-grader had kind of a rough year on Xcel Bronze. She only returned to women's gymnastics in the summer (after a few years of fluffy just-for-fun tumbling/cheer classes) and then joined the Xcel team at a different gym in the fall. She can do all of the skills, but not with...

    Parents Ages for meet levels

Do Child A, B, C, D/Junior A, B, C/Senior A, B, C categories have set ages to them, or do they vary by meet? Does anyone know what they mean for Ozone (TN)? Thanks!

Parents Is cash as part of a coach gift tacky?

I have a little wallet-purse as a coach gift but I don't want to give it empty. Is it tacky to put cash in it? Do I need to buy a gift card? I am really pressed for time and would rather give cash if that's not weird. Otherwise it will probably be a print-out of an electronic gift card for...

Parents Off-Topic: iPhone showing vulgar videos

Thank you. I had read about recolor and the danger of apps that allow private messaging, but this one seemed safe. Almost nothing really is, I guess.

Parents Off-Topic: iPhone showing vulgar videos

Forgive me because this is not relevant to gymnastics, but is a matter about parenting tweens... This morning my 11-year-old gymnast was playing Unicorn, which is a color-by-number app, on her iPhone. She reached a point where if you watch an ad, you get a free picture to color. Following the...

Parents Parental "rewards" for basic gymnastics skills?

Thanks, all! This is really helpful. Is there a way to delete posts? I've received lots of generous advice and taken it. I don't think there is going to be a groundswell of a dozen posts arguing the alternative.

Parents Parental "rewards" for basic gymnastics skills?

Thanks for the advice. I'll back off. I don't think they are being lazy or silly, just thought if they focused more during beam practice it would be easier for them (never planned to do anything different following meets based on performance). I think it's part of the transition from...
