Men's Artistic Gymnastics

Hi all,

I am so not able to see what the judges are looking for on vault. Can some of you more experienced ones help me understand what is good and not so good about my ds' level 6 vault.

Thanks!

His run is VERY slow! The judges look at the run as well as the actual vault, so try speeding up his run. he also needs to "block" off the table, meaning popping his hands off the table and hollowing out.
It's looking great so far!

I was going to mention the block as well-and if the coach in the video is your sons, we are at the same gym (although we are more than a few years away from level 6) :)

You mean the 3 coaches next to the vault in blue?

I agree with the run. I think he is probably losing a lot of points there. He should gain in speed as he runs down the runway. d used to lose a ton of pointon the run. i also can't tell if he has a full arm circle or not, but D lots poits for that as well.

Runs too slow. No block off the table. He needs to hit the table more verticle, and actually propel himself up off the table, in a straight body, or slightly hollow. He has very nice form!

If he just RUNS FAST, his score will probably go up quite a bit.

I don't think they judge the run, but the slow run certainly contributes greatly to his main problem which is "too long in support" on the table. This is up to like half a point on the girls side and that was pretty long in support. I would imagine for the boys it's also huge. It also generally means you're going to get closer to 2 points off because that's a pretty automatic failure to leave the table by vertical (up to 1 point for girls), insufficient dynamics, and insufficient height/distance on the block. His body is pretty straight, if he had more power he could probably be significantly more successful on this.

Yah...he just needs to "put the hammer down!"

they actually do judge the run in men's compulsaries:)

and i've always said, whether compulsories or not, judging the run is stoooooooooooooopid. wait a few years when this boy comes in to his own on vault. he'll still be running slower than some and he'll beat most of them. :)

D is in optionals now and I can't wait to see what happens now that they don't judge the run!! of course, that is, when he can compete and/or vault again!

he runs like a typical ectomorph. it'll come. :)
Except by the definition he's more of a mesomorph. Ectomporphs have long legs and arms and little fat or little muscle. My dd truly fits that description.

My guy has short legs and arms and builds muscle easily, esp. in his upper body.

I really hope that's true. At least he runs straight now, level 4 and 5 he always seemed wobbly on his run. He also loves going over the table so much more than the level 4 and 5 vaults.

He has also made huge improvement in only a few months. When his Osgood Schlatter's flared up in July, he didn't vault for few months. So really, he's regularly trained this vault only since November. His body positions were not this good even last weekend. So to me it looks amazing and the scores was only OK. His Mom judge would give him a great score. ;)

I appreciate this thread, because I understand more what is good and not so good about the vault. It make observing from the stands less confusing.

You know my son would kill to be able to do what your guy does once he gets to the table (for those who don't know, he is the owner and operator of the FHS vault brought to you by the letter C). I think he is doing fantastically well given all the time off. Heck, I'd say he was doing well even NOT taking that into account!

whoever i watched above is long legged and long armed and no torso. doesn't look like he has any fat. and he does have muscle. he's an ectomorph. also called "Olive Oil" body type.

and he's probably good on the swing events...p-bars and pommel horse. has good swing on rings but no strength moves. and has to work extra hard on vault and tumbling. :)

LOL, my kid to a T. When he stands and hangs his arms, his fingertips nearly reach his knees. Fairly decent inlocate/dislocate but STILL cannot hold a back lever to save his life or his coach's sanity! I figure the iron cross will come when he's about 30.
