Since the USA has qualified a team, they can only earn 2 additional total spots. But there are more than 2 ways for USA to earn spots. In addition to the event World Cup nominative spots(those belong to athlete specifically), 2 AA spots will be earned at Pan-Ams and 1 at AA World Cup series in 2020. All those are qualifying spot belonging to country. So if Jade were to get injured, her vault spot would go to someone else from another country, but USA would still likely have placed well enough in either of those other competitions to get to bring a 2nd extra athlete anyway. That's my understanding of this convoluted process, anyway. There will also be additional athlete specific spots awarded at 2019 Worlds but those only go to non-qualifying teams so won't apply to USA. Whew.I don’t love this situation. If Jade wins the spot and then gets injured, that spot is forfeited.
Maria Paseka could give her a run for her money, especially if she attends more Apparatus World Cups than Jade and wins them. The level of competition at the World Cups this quad has been top notch and way more exciting than they have ever been before. It will be very interesting to see how everything shakes out in the end.Yes, if she wins the vault spot, she still gets to do any or all events she wants to do at O's. There are 8 total event specialist World Cup competitions 2018-20, athlete counts their top 3 places. So only person that could knock out Jade is someone who also wins 3 of the World Cup events on vault, with their average score as the tie breaker. Jade is the closest thing to a lock right now.
