Just an update. My DD got her cast off today! Dr. gave her a splint and said work back to full tumbling in (he expects) three weeks. We started hand therapy this afternoon and I think she should regain her strength and flexibility well over those weeks. It wasn't as bad as I expected. With the hand therapist, we decided to use the splint just in dangerous situations like middle school/gymnastics for a little while. She will compete floor at states and petition to regionals. Wish us luck!
Mommyo2az I hope your DD is out of her cast and doing well!

That's great, but don't be surprised if it takes longer. We are now in the 4th week of PT and hoping for on target release at the end of next week. He's finally doing some light pommel work and pbars now. Wrists can take some time. As it turns out, our orthopedist was wildly optimistic about what to expect or more probably was thinking about a recovery time frame/return to "normal" for a normal person, not a gymnast. I very much hope it all goes well for her, that she kicks serious butt on floor at states, and that her regionals petition is successful!

R8 does a percentage basis for qualifying to regionals at 6/7/8. I believe they are now doing it for xcel as well.

of course, R8 also has a minimum 35 to qualify for regionals for 9/10, 9.3 for a specialist and a 36 to petition in... So we are just odd all around :p
Do you know where I can find the info about being able to petition for specialist for regionals in region 8? DD is level 10/hopes. she has been in a cast for 2 wks and can't compete state but is getting it off Friday and can possible to regionals if she can petition for specialist.

Petition info is included in this policy document. Your gym/coaches should handle this on your behalf - you will just need to provide the necessary medical documentation.

Good luck on the road to recovery! DD got her cast off in 2/20 and was doing kips today! Not tumbling for another week per her PT but we are hopeful! Full extension is back in her elbow now just need to regain that strength! See you at regionals

Just updating everyone and thank you for all your advice and kind words. DD got her cast off two weeks ago today and seems to be healing well. She competed floor at states last weekend and was happy to medal with a 9.15. She was "graduated" from PT yesterday and is working up skills for regionals now. Bars (usually her nemesis) coming back well and hoping the rest will follow! Hope everyone else is doing well.

She completed regular tumbling passes for L8, 2 weeks past cast off? I am impressed! And congrats to her!

phew!!! OK That sounds better. I was trying to figure out if she could do all salto passes but never thought about one hand ones!
Yes, salto passes out of one-handed round-offs and a no-handed front pass. It didn't really look different than other routines to me. I also got her a beige wrist guard to protect the injured hand in case of a fall but it didn't look much different than a tiger paw.

We went to a meet a couple of weeks prior for her to do the same routine with her cast on and at the last minute the meet ref. banned her from competing. Evidently, there is a new rule "no casts". It was a sad day for her and for my parents who travelled over two hours to watch her. I'm glad she finally got to try it.

The rule against gymnasts wearing a hard, non-removable cast in competition has been in rules and policies since 2017. If the meet ref hadn't enforced it, they could have been fined for violating the sanction. The coach should have known.

Agree with others that timeline for coming back for states sounds not likely or worth it. But with Regionals a full 4 weeks after states, that might be doable, by petition.
I agree, if she is back in time for regionals she can petition in maybe
