First off I'm not seeking medical advise. My dd has had chronic adductor muscle (groin) issues since Level 4 (she is now hoping to be a L9) She has been to Drs and has done pt to strengthen to no avail. Anyone else's dd have this problem? Any coaches have gymnasts with this issue?

These are the muscles that you use to pull your legs closed quickly. It will be fine for months and then she will do a round off and bam! Pain. Other things that often pull the muscle is closing her legs on her cast to handstand, tons of back-handsprings on beam, straddle jumps. The pain doesn't last as long as she takes a break from doing the things that cause the problem. Usually by the next day she is OK. (until it happens again!)

Anyway, like I said, this is on and off for years, but now she is almost worrying about getting the sharp pain of the muscle pulling. What other type of Dr. can I take her to? Any advise on this would be greatly appreciated!

there are groin injury specialists out there at sport injury clinics. You should ask your DR to recommend someone.

a DPT or Physiatrist.

edit: just had a flashback. a gymnast that we all know had this exact chronic problem for well over 3 years. they finally decided to do xrays. they found out that she had a rare form of hip dysplasia. she had surgery on BOTH hips.

so, if the problem is truly chronic maybe she needs a looksy.:)

Dunno, when I posted this I was hoping you would have some thoughts on this. lol My dd has always said her hips pop in and out. Maybe the two are related. She is very flexible. She has her yearly physical thursday. I am going to see who the Ped suggests we see. I will let you know.

Update: It seems like DD has a few problems going on here:
- IT band is way too tight especially in her left leg
- Piriformus Muscle strain
- High hamstring issue (fibers where Hamstring attaches to pelvis)

Seems like it is all related and the tight IT band is pulling the adductor muscles. I guess it is all a balance of muscles and once one is out of whack, it all goes bad.

She needs to do a ton of stretching, strengthening and deep tissue massage. No high kicks, splits or any other thing that causes her pain for awhile. The only good news is she can still do most her L9 training without limitation. It is just certain things that cause her pain. Keep your fingers crossed!

yes. the fibers you are referring to and "high hamstring issue" have to to with the ischium and ischial tuberosity. it is the uppermost strand of the hamstring where it connects to the ischium.

this can be dangerous. it is possible to crack the ischium. surgery must then be performed where a screw 'pulls' the crack back together. this almost always ends a career. so, heed the warnings and protocol.
