You are right, it is just another meet.

At the upper optional levels is where you really see attendance drop to just parent or if you are lucky 2 parents. Most likely no grandparents. In fact, we use a planning factor of 1.5 for the upper optional levels for a local meet to predict the crowd; for compulsories we use 3.0 and for lower optionals 2.0.

Our State meets this year were very well attended, but it is still just families coming.

And yes, the gate admission does scare people away. We paid $25 per person for single session at one meet this year. We charge $10 to our hosted meet and have had people walk away.
 
The E/W National meet is small and no one attends, so,,, It's not a big money maker. Probably a hundred parents per session watching at the most in Boise (looked like 50 but I didn't count).
