simply, a good Yurchenko can generate far more energy than a conventional vault.

simply this, a conventional vault running at average speed of 11 miles an hour will hit the table at approx 10-12 times their body mass in force. as in the Yurchenko, a gymnast can not run full out top speed cause it can 'dis-coordinate' the last step and hurdle.

Yurchenko has the same average speed approach. but all things being equal, and the hurdle>round off>to whip back/flip flop on to the table are seamless, they will hit the table anywhere from 18-20 times their body mass thus creating copious amounts of force and rotational speed.

and landing short on a Tsuk will hurt a helluva a lot less than a Yurchenko simply because of the force/energy created before landing. or landing badly if you will. :)

It all depends on the gymnast, although it's sad that the tusk is becoming a skill of the past. IMO a full twisting tsukahara or kasamatsu is a more dynamic vault, and would love to see more of them. As a level 6/7 I like to work both vaults to get a feel for what each gymnast would better benefit from. To only teach one or the other is stubborn, and in some cases may rob gymnast of future possibilities.

My dd moved to a new gym this summer. She had been training Tsuks at the old gym, but coach at new gym started working Yurchenkos while continuing tsuks. He says that for college she needs a yurchenko. Fast forward to January....she competed a tsuk at her first meet and did okay, but does not like tsuks and doesn't get the power to make it great (Scored 8.8). She is not a power gymnast. She worked the Yurchenko the last two weeks and competed it yesterday- landed it beautifully, scored a 9.2 and has decided she never wants to do a tsuk again.
