DD injured herself last night during vault (hurdling into RO for yurchenko). X-rays are clear and MRI is on Thursday. She thinks she heard the snap as she jumped up into her hurdle but it may have been right as she came back down. Based on the initial location of swelling and current swelling (below knee and now includes knee) and the fact she can't engage her quads to lift her leg and could bend but not straighten leg on her own last night, we are suspecting a possible patellar rupture. I know kids come back from partial tears but not sure about full tears. I fear the stress placed on the tendon from the explosiveness of the sport may mean this is the end for DD, even after surgical repair. She was training for L9. Any experience with this? We are really hoping we are wrong (who would imagine an ACL tear may be a better prognosis)!

Im so sorry! Your poor dd must be freaking out! (you too!!!) DEEP BREATHS!!!

just another story-
Teammate with PARS defect....spinal specialist tells her either live with the pain or undergo fusion.....
decided to undergo fusion.....Dr. said we will see what happens with gymnastics....
Surgery was 3 months ago....she was cleared for bars, and beam and will be able to tumble soon.....
they thought it was over and it wasn't.....Not that I would have gone this route, but her recovery is truly miraculous. The dr. said its the fastest recovery for fusion he has ever had.
NEVER give up....Sending healing fairies to you!!!!!!

It doesn't have to be the end. Kids have come back from worse, of the injury is treated correctly and the body is cared or she can come back even stronger than before. Injuries are awful but they can give a gymnast a chance to really focus on weaker areas.

I don't have any experience with this injury but wanted to send you hugs. I sure hope it is better news than you are expecting. Try not to think the worst right now. Hope her pain gets under control soon.

On of our graduating seniors this spring, headed to NCAA gymnastics career, completed her 4th year as a level 10, been to nationals, won regionals...that kind of gymnast, dislocated her knee and tore her patellar tendon I believe in June. Was having surgery this summer and I just saw her pics with the freshman gymnasts at college - so she is going for it!

no experience. Sorry she is going through this. Keep us updated. Hopefully it is less than you anticipate. dd is recovering from a tibial plateau fracture that occurred in late May. We initially thought was much worse, based on location, swelling, pain, and inability to bear weight. It was still bad but she had a "best case scenario" for this type of fracture and hopefully will compete at least some events in Jan. L10.

actually, common. partial or complete she'll come back. :) and you'd want this over an ACL rupture any day. :):)

I believe Laurie Hernandez also had that type of injury when she was a Jr Elite.

Here is the quote about Laurie's injury...

"But then she was hit by injury, first fracturing her wrist early in 2014 and then dislocating her right kneecap, tearing her patella ligament and bruising her MCL all on one bad vault landing that same year. The knee injuries required surgery and a piece of a cadaver’s ligament was attached to her own."
