Grips riding up and jamming into my wrists

I just got grips and this was my second practice using them.

When I swing on the bar, the buckle part of the grip pulls upwards, so when I get on top of the bar my arms won't straighten because the buckle jams into my wrist. I'm worried the grips might be too small; the grip part sits pretty far down on my fingers and is still pulled taught when I splay my hands. I tried pulling the wrist band farther up but it didn't stop the problem. My coach thinks I'm not grabbing the dowel properly. Advice? I tried tightening them, loosening them, and pulling them in various directions.

I talked to my coach again at practice today and she kind of blew it off and said it's "how they work". I have trouble believing this because no one else complained of wrist pain when they got their grips.
