My dd just finished up her Level 6 season in March and is now working on Level 7 skills. She is super flexible and has an issue with her legs on her backhandspring stepout on beam. She can do a 2 foot backhandspring and land it on a high beam fine, but has the leg issue on stepout. Her coach says the 2 foot landing is fine but to have her working drills. Last night she was doing them over a octagon rolley. She wants to get both types of backhandsprings. Does anyone have any other ideas on what she could do to help. coach says her hips are squared but if she trys to split fast like she is supossed to then her leg swings out to the side before she brings it back in line.

Maybe she should do this in stages instead of all at once....Week 1 step out to 90 degrees staying square an aligned....week 2 step out to 112.5 degrees.....adding enough each week for it to feel different. Each week is spent teaching her body to "identify" the amount of split for that week. No "nibbling" at the edges of the step out, and no swallowing it whole. five weeks, five bites, no fudging up or down during a week.

Thanks for the advice, she has been working hard with her coaches and I am happy to report that she was finally able to land a couple on the floor beam last night at practice, she was happy with her progress and plans to continue practicing both until she has it on high beam also. She just has to really concentrate on making that leg square up.
