Injury for Story

I'm writing a gymnastics story and I need a injury that is serious but a gymnast can eventually come back to gymnastics, and is caused by a gymnast landing on her neck. It would be great if you could give me details on how the injury is healed as well.

well i know of one injury where it could be discovered by the gymnast landing on her neck -- a stress fracture in the spine--

Someone with a fractured vertebrae can still return to gymnastics provided it's not too serious and there's no spinal cord damage. Maybe take a look at Jessica Gil Ortez. She had a nasty fall at Worlds last year (I was watching it...pretty nasty). She actually fractured a vertebrae but is still hoping to compete 2012 so that could be an option for your story
