Hello,

I've read these forums for awhile but just now joined. My 5-year old is a month into her gymnastics journey. She has been waiting for a long time to join and now here we are. She has been around sports her entire life as I am a coach myself. Right now we live in West Texas but I foresee a move to the Dallas area soon in order to pursue this at a higher level. She has started at 5 hours per week in the gym and we work at home an additional 5-6 hours weekly. I have bars,beam, octagon mats...ect...

I am a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialists (CSCS) and a Sports Performance Coach through USA Weightlifting. I also have my Masters of Science. I have extensive experience in working with athletes ranging all the way to professional athletes. Mostly I work with elite high school athletes and college athletes.

Though I am "newer" to the gymnastics world, I can help with any sports performance questions you guys have.

She'd do more if I let her. I have to cut her off... But keep in mind, I have an extensive background in human performance. Her programming takes this into account and I am able to alter training where needed. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are under the guidance of someone who has the education and experience in sports performance. A lot of her "extra" training is based on mobility and proprioception work.

Actually I was hoping this post was a joke. When my DD was 5 she was doing 2 hours a week, coloring, reading, spending time with friends, etc. To each their own......

I can understand where you are coming from. I have 4 kids, her being the youngest. The other 3 are your average kids. Her on the other hand, has a rare focus and drive that is not common in most 5-year olds, or most athletes I've worked with. She wants to work every waking minute. This is completely driven by her. I've experienced this focus and drive with a hand full of my athletes over time. 1 is in the NBA, 1 will probably end up on the US Olympic track team throwing shot and the others are playing or have finished college football.

My goal is to make sure she understands it's ok to make mistakes, and that it's about the process, not the result that is important. Too many times we get caught up in what the scores are rather than the process and work that got you where you are. I try to instill in all my athletes, you can only control your attitude and effort, and as long as those are on the positive side, then you did your job.

And she gets a healthy dose of play time too! I make sure of it...
