And please be diligent about a follow up xray. I broke my ankle and was diagnosed as a severe sprain. Several months later and I still wasn't able to walk smoothly. MRI showed two fractures that xrays missed. I will never walk without pain again because I didn't listen to the pain signals my body sent me. I know you don't want that for your little gymmie.
I don't trust ERs 100%, especially with kids, unless you are going to a Children's Hospital. Last yr my dd did a tumbling pass rolled her ankle severely and ended up breaking her 5th metatarsal (tendon only stretches so far before it will break the bone - turns out it was a Jones' fracture.) Immediately got a call from the gym, I went in and got her. We went to the ER, they did x-rays and said they couldn't find a break, wrapped her foot in an ace bandage and told me to follow up with an Ortho. The next day we went to an Pediatric Ortho, who basically laughed and said it is clearly broke, I don't know how they missed it and immediately casted it. This is just my experience. If your gut continues to tell you there is something wrong, then make sure you do follow up!
