Parents So, our gym doesn't have a pit...

:) I wasn't debating you... I was looking for clarification for us parents who have not experienced such expansive gyms and pits. It's hard to know for sure from the video, but that pit looks more than double (maybe even triple) any we have seen in the gyms we have been in for meets. So when you mention $100k for pits, and I (or any other parent in smaller gyms) don't have the experience of such a huge pits, it doesn't make sense - hence the confusion and request for clarification.

i meant that endearingly :) not in a snarky way at all. i gotcha.

I just quoted out a redesign for our gym. It came to about $175,000. About $150,000 of this was somehow involved with the new pits I would like to add.

EDIT: Yes...I'm talking about the real deal pit system...not the world's smallest hole with foam in it...our club already has one of those.

you still want to question the $100,000 cost?

After seeing the size and design?........No question about the cost. I was thinking more like a "run of the mill" set-up used primarily for vault, tumbling, and bars. You know, kinda like a starter set for a growing gym.

I've never heard anyone here in NZ talk about a 'resi', but at our gym we do have a section of the pit that has a big mat in it that is used for tumbling. I'm not sure what the coaches call it, but DD calls it the 'pit mat'. There is also a trampoline in there. The rest of the pit has a couple of bars, rings and a vault table. There is no trampoline at the bottom, it has a kind of suspended net. It is pretty big, it goes right across the back of the building. It gets used all the time, especially by the higher level MAG and WAG and IDP. There is a much smaller pit in the rec gym, which used to be the main gym until the new one was built, probably only about one-sixth of the size. It is now only used for the rec kids to have fun.

yes, Nicki. that was a Canadian invention back in the early 80's. for awhile, there were gyms here that used the cargo/rope netting at the bottom of their pits. there were problems with those and the tramps eventually evolved from that Canadian invention. the first pits were in Russia and were earthen bottom. scrap foam was thrown in the hole. just thought you might want to know who was responsible for the original pits.:)

Thanks, Dunno. I haven't had a look at other gyms' pits, but I suspect the netting might be fairly standard here - I must have a peek next time I'm at another gym for a comp! What kind of problems can the nets cause?

Harbour has a net.

Entrainement J center haguenau gymnastique octobre 2012 - YouTube (2:00 onwards) I assume these are the airpits mentioned in previous posts, they look neat (aside from the vomit colour). How do these compare to Resi's and are they cheaper long term than loose foam (and yes I understand the need for loose foam).

Dunno.. was it Mitova who hit her head on a tyre used to 'pad' the concrete in the pit?

In my experience it is like landing on jello, but then landing in a foam block pit is not too stable either. They are certainly easier to get out of afterwards and there is none of the cleaning the bottom of the pit to do.

OMG, you know that true story. yes, they put tires at the bottom of their pits to try to solve the problem of air flow so that the scrap wouldn't pack down such as it did in the early versions of cement bottom pits. or in their case, an earthen bottomed hole in the ground. hence, the evolution of the nets and then tramp bottoms. we used to take 2X6 pieces of lumber and jamb them down to the bottom to teeter tawter the foam from the bottom and lift them up. it was a real PITA and very time consuming and had to be done every 6-8 turns! lol!

i'm startled that anyone knows that story. that was long ago. and yes, she was doing a back in full out and opened early and went in head first. if you know that position that they are in when you open early, then you know you become much like a spear. she went straight to the bottom and knocked herself out on a truck tire. she didn't make it down to the dirt though. lol. but i give the Russians credit where credit was/is tried, true and tested. if it wasn't for them, it might have been much later before someone else figured out that we needed pits to train high level gymnastics. lol. i'm sitting here literally laughing hard cause you know that story...:):)

yes again, Pineapple Lump. those airpits are the bomb. i was there a few years ago with a delegation from the US. i got to see them first hand. they're uber awesome. and no mess. literally. NO foam boogers! the landing was close to having an 8 inch mat on top of loose foam. very stable. 1 huge inflatable with the fans built in to the walls of the pit. unfortunately, since our government doesn't support us, these devices are overtly cost prohibitive for our purchase here. BUT, Mancino has solved 1 of the problems by manufacturing basically the same thing that is placed under the foam and when it inflates it brings all the foam up. and not near expensive as the other, but maybe someday will be financially feasible for some of us. i'll tell you, even though my system works perfectly well in how we use our pits and resi's, if i was wealthy i would've brought back those devices to fit when i came back. they really are something.:)

Dunno,When you say you were HERE,do you mean HERE in Haguenau ?!!!At our gym??It would have been so cool if you had come this year,I could have met you in person.!

Lol at the Green color .It's actually beige-ish,just looks puke green on this vid.

The funding is partly tuition, private sponsors, and some government funding .

My daughter is in the sport étude programme (she's in this vid ,not that this adds anything to the discussion ,lol, couldn't help myself)The girls in this programme all go to the same public school, but leave an hour early. The gym picks the girls up from school and takes them to the gym,we just pick them up in the evening. My daughters group goes 6 days a week for 3 hours a day and the YEARLY tuition is 750€.That is about 900 USD.This includes competion Leo and free consultation with a phisiotherapist who comes to the gym twice à week.

Back to the pit question in this vid starting @5.16 minutes,I think we have an example of a good coach using a pit in an intelligent way.

Of course if I'm wrong I'm sure Dunno will promptly shatter my illusions:D
