Hypothetically, if you are choosing between two coaches,

(1) older, top gymnast, longer coaching experience.
(2) much younger, did gymnastics but has not reached the same level as the first coach and having less coaching experience.

In comparing the two coaches as listed above, it may seem that the first coach might seem the obvious choice. Let me add a little more information. Coach one owned a gym at one time and now works as a head coach for a franchise gym for over two years. Until this year, the gymnasts in said gym were rarely placing at meet. This year, it looks like the coach has turned things around and his gymnasts are placing in the top three spots at meet in our area. He however, does not have any Level 9s and 10s in his current gym. Coach two worked at a small gym and recently joined another franchise gym and has also only worked there for around 3 years. It was only last year that he had Level 10s. His level 10s were scoring 31s on their first year level 10 season. This season as second year level 10s, they are scoring 35 to 36. In addition, all his other levels are placing first in state championships. In short Coach two's gymnasts are placing higher than Coach one's. From speaking with family members of Coach Two, he is very determined and motivated.

With this limited information, what do you see are the pros and cons on choosing a coach who is more experienced or a coach who appears to be equally "talented" at coaching gymnasts but seems "hungrier"?

If you are trying to chose a gym, have your dd or ds try both, then decide. There is no magic formula that you can see on paper. What may work well for some, may not for others. Try them out first hand.
