WAG What is the monkey swing for?

I'm assuming I'm using the right terminology. It's where they put their feet on the bar and then swing around backward, to make a full circle.
What is that for? Is it just for an "oops" situation when trying to jump to the high bar?

It is a sole circle, it is a circling skill. Yes could be used for an oops but it is also a progressive skill that leads to other skills.

I've always thought sole circles looked fun too. Glad I'm not the only one.

Casting away and then jumping in to perch on top of the bar in a squat on - eek no thankyou. That would scare the pants off me everytime! Swinging under, well yeah, looks more fun!

Thanks! DD just started learning them, and it didn't make sense why, then again, I had no idea they had a real name besides "monkey swing".

DD loves them. A lot of girls here compete them at old L6.... and it is a great stepping stone to do the toe up (what I call the sole circle to HS), which most girls here do for L8.
